320 engine into 02, swap issues?

Replacing a tired 76 02 engine with an 81 320. My plan is to

transfer the Weber 32/36 and tii exhaust manifold onto the

320 engine. Any pitfalls with this plan?

What about the ignition system? I know the dizzy runs

opposite but this isn't an issue with a complete swap right?

What of the 320's igniton module? Motor mounts the same?

Help please!

Thanks,

Bruce H

I also expected more of a sense of community. You were

happy to take the time to post a snide comment but not

willing to help. Makes no sense to me.

the same question over and over.

People expect you to take time and type out over and over again but wont take the time to search.

Here you go took me about 15 seconds:

I did this because the 2002 engine was frozen up when I got it

and the 320 one was fresh and available. You have to use the

2002 oil pan, oil pump pickup, and water pump, but other than

that it's a direct swap if you remove the K-jet stuff and bolt up a

2002 intake manifold and carb. Oh, and the 320 cylinder head

doesn't have provisions for the 2002 mechanical fuel pump, so

you have to use an electric pump in the trunk. The 320 up to and

including 1979 has same basic engine as the 2002, but the points

about originality are well taken. If you're going to rebuild anyway,

you might as well do the original motor, right?

Weirdly enough, I'm now rebuilding the enigne I took out of my

'76 2002 to be put in my brother's '81 320i.

It is just because you didnt mention that you hve done a search and that you havent found what you were looking at.

Believe me, just enter "320" into search engine and plenty of threads will come up about doing such transplant.

Just to show you that i am not nuts, i got plenty of time to tell you.

-the oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube and braket is different. The 3rd main cap will need to have its bolt changed for longer ones to instal the braket to hold the plate that holds the end of the oil pump pick-up tube.

-Engine mounts are at the same location, altough totaly diferent mounts. The lower braket that reinforce the link at the transmission dont have its bolt tapered into the block. I dont run it on my car so i dont think this is a real issue.

-The distributor could be used as is, with its electronic igniter. Very easy to take off of the car, there is one plug at the distributor, and one other plug where there is +12v from ignition switch, tachomoeter output and ground. There is also an external ground that needs to be grounded on the block. If you dont do so, it will not fires at all.

-water pump is different, it got al onger neck.

Other than that, the engine is totaly a bolt-on affair. It will accept any intakes (ti,tii, 318,...)

The hole for the fuel pump is not there at all so figure an external pump if you go play there.

Hope this helps.

you have the pigtail for the module. I can fax a wiring schematic if necessary. Otherwise, it's install '02 oil pan & pickup, '02 water pump, electric fuel pump and drop it in.

The search yielded a post on how to wire the 320 ignition to

the 02. I plan on transfering the weber and the orig 02

manifold along with the tii ex manifold to the 320 motor. I

guess I can transfer the waterpump and fan too.
