'02 identification model

Recommended Posts

Hi,

just found one 1971 BMW 1602 closed in a family garage for almost 30 years. Looks great for the years stocked, interior without damages, with original painting and still good, and a clean engine. I could not hear it because of the battery miss. Ok, everythings lokks fine and i bought it.

I saw that was a round back lights, chrome bumpers, the back one going into the tyres....everything showing that was a pre-71 or a 71 modell.

I try to identify it on the production table but .....don't have reference with that VIN

BMW cars were sent to Portugal as a CKD in that years and built here in Vendas Novas. In the VIN numbers were add ..../VN

Regarding to mine i see that is very close to the last 1600-2 but nothing on the table...

VIN: 1063700/VN

engine: 1063700

I think that is probably one of the firsts 1602 built.

Someone who can help identifying it?

1063700 doesn't come up on the VIN Decoder as a valid VIN.  Does that number match the number on the back of the block and the passenger side of the front fender mounting structure under the hood?

You could send an e-mail to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com with the VIN and see if they have any records for it.

Good luck,

Well it was undoubtedly a CKD car assembled in Portugal, but it has a VIN not in the CKD VIN range that I know of.

1600-2 model pre 71 ('68, '69 & '70)   VIN 1060001 to 1061683

1600-2 model 71 ('71, '72 & '73)   VIN 1085001 to 1088478

1602 model 73 ('73, '74 & '75)    VIN 2890001 to 2892913

So, 1063700 is a mystery.

Is the VIN plate like the picture below?

Thanks for the informations.

I´m only gonna pick the car this weekend and when i was seeing the car and did the business i forgot to see the plates... but sure that is correct.

I know that was the transition time from the 1600-2 to the 1602 and in the documents they refer 1602. Only misses to see on the car.

1602 model 73 ('73, '74 & '75)    VIN 2890001 to 2892913

and the 1602 from 71-73 ?

Please post a pic of the VIN plate.

If, as noted in your above picture, the car was registered first Nov '72 it should be a model 71.

The suspense is killing me. Les?

The VIN is good; matches the inner fender stamped VIN.

It's a mystery as the Portuguese CKD VIN ranges that I know of, do not include this VIN.

I don't want to be boring but regarding to the vin numbers of the 1600-2, 2002 and 1602, i think that this one is from 1971.

following the sequence, we have first 1600-2 until 1971 (last ones ...1061683); then we have 1602 starting at 1085001 from 71.

after 73 the numbers start by 2.

someone who can have the range of the firsts 1602 assembled in Portugal?

Interesting stuff!  And that VIN of 1063700 suggests at least 2,000 more examples than Les’s records show (1063700 less 1061683 =  2,017), just before the Modell 71 introduction (April 1971 for Munich-manufactured ‘02’s).

I seem to recall that BMW Group Archives has little or no details for the CKD (and PKD) cars. But...

Why not send an email to Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) with your car’s VIN, and the photos of the VIN tag and engine number, and ask if they can provide any additional information on the car? I fully expect them to say “Sorry, but our files do not include the CKD cars.” But there is no cost to this inquiry, so you have nothing to lose, except for 30 seconds constructing the single-sentence, two-photo email!

Regards,

Steve

Conserv,

I already contact them for informations.

they answer:

Dear Mr Gonçalves,

Thank you for your email which has been forwarded to the BMW Group Archive.

The VIN 1063700 belongs to a BMW 1602 CKD model (completely knocked down)

Unfortunately we have no production records for these cars and therefore cannot find out any further details.

And here in Portugal I can see only that tables that I sent.

As expected...

Is there anything whatsoever in a 2007 article on Portuguese CKD’s that sheds light on this subject? The article is referenced in the follow post:

Best regards,

Steve
