I believe that car used to belong to Reggie Stewart.  He sold it at an auction - maybe Auburn, last year.  I believe it did not have the original engine.  Nice car, though.

Correct has a '71 mtr. Sold in auction ~6 month ago & immediately appeared on Ebay for an extra $12k. A quick flip didn't happen.

I had the opportunity to purchase this 2002 in 2017 before Reggie Stewart bought it. The price was too high in my opinion, so I passed on it. Reggie negotiated a better price and he bought it not long after I'd considered the car. Reggie fixed a number of things and later sold it. The current asking price is a huge leap above what I might have paid for it in 2017! Perhaps I should have bought it, I don't know. I am very happy with the one I purchased from Andrew Ganz, however.

The 950th US 2002 off the line...it's funny, though how folks tend to paint the embossed nose trim--the factory never did that, but the press pool car that was used for all the car magazine road tests in 1968 had 'em painted, probably by the PR folks at Hoffman Motors.  Too bad the engine isn't original...wonder what happened to it.

BMW actually sold only 2700-odd 2002s in the US for model year 1968, as the first ones didn't arrive until early April, and the '69 model year began on 1 Sept.  The figure quoted in the ad are for BMW's calendar year 1968 production, which figure includes the '69s that were built between 1 Sept and 31 Dec '68.

For you owners of early 68s like this one--I thought all '68s had to have the VIN on a metal plate atop the steering column, but this one doesn't have it.  What about yours?

Mike,

It looks like we need to find a new effective date for the U.S. regulation that mandated VIN’s be visible from outside each car. I think we’re mostly familiar with changes effective either with a new model year (e.g., September 1-ish) or a new calendar year (i.e., January 1). The 2002 above, which is VIN 1660951, and tahoedon’s owner 1600-2 are 1968 models manufactured in early February 1968 cars. Gary’s very original 1968 1600-2, VIN 1560364, manufactured September 18, 1967, is consistent (photos below). None bears any evidence of a steering column VIN tag.

So could the 1969 model year (e.g., September 1-ish) have been the effective date?

As you’ve asked already, who else has a bona fide 1968 model?

Best regards,

Steve

My US 68 manufactured in July, delivered to Munich in July has no tag. And there can be no doubt that this is the original pad!

Fixed that for you... ??

Thank you very much, even if you can’t vouch for the originality of the top  “clamshell.”

Regards,

Steve
