Engine number bmw 1600 1967

Are the engine and chassis numbers meant to match on these early 1600s? Just noticed the chassis is 1550298 and my engine is 1554383. Owned the car for 27 years so I’m guessing first owner  changed. Any idea what that engine is from?

1554383 is a motor from a 1972 1602.

If you email the VIN’s to BMW Group Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) and request their data on your car and engine, they will provide the cars’ specific manufacturing dates, factory colors, and place or party of original deliveries. No charge. Generally takes two business days.

 

The engine block has a casting date on the right side, in the vicinity of the number one and two freeze plugs.

 

 

The head, similarly, has a casting date, on the left side, generally near the number three and four intake runners. These casting dates are generally shortly before the car’s manufacturing date.

In short, kyri, no! If they tweaked a few more horsepower out of the (1.6) engine during those 5 years, it wasn’t enough to change your life.
