Thought of a few others:

  • the early single-piece-of-folded-over-metal the factory used for a right side motor mount up through 1970 or so...most have stress cracked (or collapsed) by now.
  • original metal oil filler caps
  • original chrome exhaust tip

I see that some posts focus on stuff that just disappears, falls off, or is never put back for some odd reason.  They may be minor, cosmetic, NLA, or too expensive.

And some stuff is removed intentionally.  Like trim.  (guilty)

I have seen a brace that bolts to the starter and the block on some cars.  Part # 12411261706.  My tii doesn't have it.  Never did since I got it 14 years ago.

Mike's post above regarding the right side motor mounts on the early cars reminded me of my 69 when I first bought it.  The oil pan was vibrating against the subframe.  The mount had collapsed.  Easy enough I thought.  Get the updated reinforced unit.  Yeah.  But then, the exhaust was no longer fitting.  The previous owner had bent the down-pipe to adapt to the collapsed mount.  And the exhaust system was all welded together too.  I had to replace the whole exhaust system from the manifold back. That was over 20 years ago.  Ah... the memories.

My 69 came to me with that weird engine mount.

Hope you kept it, Jim, for our Museum of Crap Parts Installed by BMW! I’m saving a spot for it between the 1974-76 gummihaar and the 1966-68 stub axle boots... ???

Best regards,

Steve

I’m sorry to take pleasure in your misfortune, Pierre, but this is a great story!

Well, my list is extensive, but my car when received was surprisingly original. I removed a lot of stuff, but boxed it or put it aside for the next caretaker. Think the only think I chucked were the shocks, filters, brake pads, old hoses, the stuff that wears out and the tii calipers. I regret trading those in for a core charge, but I did the brake upgrade.

Hey Mike! I'm actually looking for the original chrome exhaust tip :(
do you know where I can find one?

Please take this with a grain of salt but a BMW parts supplier (last week) told me that BMW will manufacture the chrome exhaust tips again in May of 2020.  I will believe it when I can actually hold one of them in my hand.

Removed on purpose.

• Lower dash pad under the steering column.

• Pedal box insulation.

• Strut spacers.

• Seat belt buzzer

Just not there.

• Diagnostic plug on valve cover.
