I’ve not a clue, Tom. But if I had to guess, I’d say cylinder number 1, as well!

Just since no one has mentioned, PatAllen on the FAQ has been making new tuner boxes to utilize the port.  Not sure if he's still making them.  It won't tell you much, maybe RPM, dwell, starter button, etc.  But its fun.

Also, you can hotwire the car and the starter via the port if you need.  A simple jumper will put 12V to your ignition coil, and trigger the starter.  It's been a while since I've done it, but a simple multimeter will tell you what each terminal does.  Find the 12V hot one, and jump that to other terminals, and see what magic happens.

This is not the same port, this is a second one that goes from the coil and is attached to the valve cover.

Pat’s box works with “Buckeye’s port”, not “Tom’s port!
 

To reiterate, there were originally two underhood diagnostic ports on ‘02’s:

 

1.) On a bracket on the left inner fender, near the fuse holder (a.k.a., “Buckeye’s port,” shown in context in the first photo below), and 

 

2.) On a bracket attached to the right rear stud for the valve cover (a.k.a., “Tom’s port,” shown in context in the second photo below).

 

Pat’s box accesses only Item 1.). These ports had different functions; they were not simply different locations with similar functionality. Did I mention that there were originally two different ports? ?

There are 2 pickup coils on this assembly.  One is on the coil HT wire and the other is normally on plug wire no 1.  To test the coil for the plug wire, any cylinder plug wire will do. 

 

An explanation is needed as to how the testing is to be done.  Not much will be seen except a spike on an oscilloscope with each plug fire.  The coil wire pickup will normally show 4 times a many spikes.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Most of them are long gone: 1.) owners installed new spark plug wiring, including the coil wire, and ditched the old system; and 2.) the diagnostic machines became obsolete.

In order to install this one correctly, I would need to cut the spark plug wire, slide the collar over the wire and reinstall the end.  Probably why people tossed them.

I think the Bakelite plug ends of the wires are simply screwed into the core of the wire.  It might be wise to shorten the wire a little bit when reinstalling, to give the screw new material to bite into.

Thanks, I haven't even looked at that yet.  I just know the collar is very small.

Installed it, I needed to install a new wire from coil to dizzy as there was zero continuity in the old one.  The only way to do that was to drill out the old one and make a route in the big rubber block for the new wire.

Well done, Tom! Slippery slope, however: now that e21 radiator is looking.... really inappropriate. I’m thinking W&N HD... ?

 

You may also want to adjust the spark plug wire wraps/retainers now that you have the original rear wire guide in place, as below — a factory photo of an early tii. Besides fitting the wires for cylinders 1, 2, and 3 into the new bracket, the wire guide bracket for the cylinder 1 and 2 wires gets bent upward, so that it is in the same plane as the new bracket holding cylinder 1, 2, and 3 wires. Just sitting around here in NYC looking for work I can create for my forum buddies... ?

Slippery slope indeed!  The PO was having some overheating issues I’m thinking....in the box of parts were 2 additional thermostats for different temperatures and then he installed that radiator.   Atlanta heat and stop and go traffic is a bitch, lack of a fan shroud also doesn’t help as you know!
I was going to run the wires correctly but the one I tried to put on broke the old brittle plastic, I glued it back together but it won’t hold wires.  I’m going to try to find another wire guide and give it a go.

There are plenty of things in that engine bay I could spend a lot of time on to get it right!
