You should see me at bowling. I throw the bowling ball like Kobe. I've only been banned from 6 bowling alleys so far.

Our resident clown up above suggested this little guy :

He says it fits under the rear seat nicely and adds a nice kick to the current system. I'll oblige and buy this woofer. Can't hurt.

That's not what I said.  I said it's sitting behind the front passenger seat and I haven't bothered to see if it fits under the front seat. It does not fit under the rear seat.

:)

No one sits in my backseat anyway. Or my passenger seats.

Okay, it does fit under the rear seat if you lower the floor 6 inches.

If I buy this, I have to modify it to fit as there is already a speaker back there. I may just make my own.

  • 3 months later...

I saw you posted in a WTB thread. If you are thinking of selling this, I may be interested. I’m looking for a car in good mechanical condition and rust free. Does not need to be perfect as I want to have some room for personalization. I’m new to the 2002 boards, so can’t DM yet.

Thanks.

I need to update this thread.

This car has been on jack stands for roughly 11 months. This has partially do to because I was lazy, but partially to do with me waiting on parts to arrive from the Netherlands.

About 11 months ago I sold off the GC coilovers to a friend who wanted a set and I figured I would continue with the planned AST Suspensions set up I wanted. I sent in a spare set of tii spindles to be modified and through one problem or another, the process moved from 2 months to 11ish months to be completed. They are finally here and they look good. Higher quality than GC, and comparable to KW. I don't have a comparison with MCS, but would like one.

These coilovers are the "Model 5100" variant. A single adjustable street kit with lightweight in mind.

Here are some photos:

spare tii housings

tii spindles next to standard 2002 spindles to give you an idea of spindle girth differences

I shipped these off to AST for some magic. This was the photo they sent me early on and had me sold. Both front and rears use inverted shocks and there was a technical reason for this, but I don't retain useful information. I just liked the colors.

AST_5100_BMW_2002.thumb.jpeg.3d84d71f6be17c0131388c604bbea8c8.jpeg

So anyways, that took a considerably longer time. The world was in chaos, supply chain issues for certain parts and materials to build the sets, a few redesigns mid-build, etc. I was anxious the whole time, but too lazy to get the car back onto standard suspension so I can drive it around in the interim.

This is what showed up:

IMG_0010.thumb.jpg.8bcd9ccb5c86af164cd23ba7a35ff673.jpg

And how you adjust the fronts:

990571542_AST5100.thumb.jpeg.f6e4f0db6ecc187f524e4f2795ab204e.jpeg

You can see in a previous photo that AST added a window in the bottom of the housing with a tool to twist the knob. This was a nice design feature they added later.

Now that the suspension is in, I don't have an excuses to not get the car back on the ground and on the road. But I also found myself ordering a hundred other things "while you're in there. Things like Powerflex bushings all around, redo rear subframe with camber/castor correction, refresh trailing arms, all new hardware everywhere, fresh rebuilt front brake calipers, a gang of powdercoated parts, install Matt Pekin's wild new control arms, and more things. It's a lot and I'm in a mad dash to get it all done.

IMG_7728.thumb.JPG.72b8faf25e6a011d09ba0f80599150bc.JPG

Matt Pekin is a close friend and will help me get all front and rear suspension dialed and aligned...probably next week.

I have a bucket of hardware at the platers right now and that could take a few days. I really want to get the rear subframe back in.

I caveman'd this thing out on my back in my garage. It's the most humbling automotive thing I've done in a while.

IMG_7954.thumb.JPG.7cf9e0f4b2370d6fc8018a60d9ef3b3a.JPG

Then got everything looking much prettier

IMG_7969.thumb.JPG.881b1ec6c656ae3e747af223547f6123.JPG

I did this the lazy way with the diff still in the car so I'm antsy to get it back into the back to support the diff once again.

Front brake rotors are NLA everywhere so I had to get my existing tii rotors resurfaced before install. I went with longer wheel studs too. It's crazy how many parts I can't get ahold of anymore, and no firm date in which they will be restocked. I'm hopeful I don't need to buy too many more NLA parts.

Lots more to do, but I'm at a good pace.

As soon as suspension is dialed, it goes in for a full Son Of Cobra carbon fiber kit. All four corners, hood, trunk, and probably roof (haven't committed to this yet). The car should lose a few hundred pounds, with cf replacement body panels, and the loss of bumpers, stock seats, lighter battery, carbon fiber dashboard, etc.

At the same time, I'm having an m10 built to 2.2L spec for that extra fun factor. This will also give me an opportunity to get the front subframe redone and engine bay painted. I would like to seam stitch the chassis and lighten up any heavy part I can find.

We've been hard at work in the SOC lair and it's happening very soon. I'll need to repaint the car too.

We took fresh molds from my trunk and roof. We wanted perfection before we offer parts for sale.

I rebuilt the tii calipers. Either they will work or i'll die due to brake failure. Either is fine.

Looking at the weights of the front fenders hood roof panel trunk and rear fender panels the total weight is 61 to 65 kg or under 150 lbs. so your weight savings using carbon fiber is under 60 Lbs.

Few more noteworthy mentionables.

Paul (Son of Cobra) is building himself a second car for more of an around town "beater". This car is manila yellow. He has a lot of fun, experimental parts that we brainstormed and he made into reality. He is a wizard.

We found a double diaphragm brake booster that doesn't require too much modification and has better carb clearance than a tii booster. Can't wait to try this out. Oh and we did the weber air horns too.

The transparent fiberglass is really growing on me. The idea was to pay homage to the Porsche race cars of the 60s with their lightweight transparent fiberglass bodies.

I can't wait to show you guys the details on the Son Of Cobra parts. No detail goes overlooked.
