Vin ? on 1600

I went to look at a project 1967 1600 with a VIN that started with 1519,  Trying to find when it was built, The earliest I see started with 1560 . Does anybody have any info on a 1519

CORRECTION:

 

The VIN Register at the colombian page https://www.bmwclasicos.com/foro/threads/595/ shows that as a car built  sometime in 1967. A total of 32,062 were built in that period.

 

Can you get a pic of the VIN plate attached to the inner right fender, or the number stamped on it and post it?

1600-2 production started with 1500001 in March 1966. I’d guess that 1519xxx is approximately March 1967.

Even though it’s nearly 20,000 cars into the production run, that’s a very early car. U.S. imports of the 1600-2 during 1966 represent a miniscule portion of the production.

The BMW 2002 Car Club of Columbia is only going to get you so far. Attached is their decoding.

I’ll stick by my March-ish 1967 guess. Les might have something more precise. My closest point of reference is VIN 1519935, manufactured March 16, 1967.
 

But it only takes 30 seconds to email the VIN to BMW Group Archives, and you’ll probably have the specific manufacturing date within one or two business days.

Cars been sitting outside at least 20-30 years in the santa barbara area so it needs everything, drivetrain intact, Mostly there, some rust, I think I'll pass on this one if anybody is interested here it is. It;s at a wrecking yard

Lots of good stuff here! Most of it, admittedly, in wretched condition. $3,700 seems quite ambitious. The alternator and 12-volt regulator indicate it’s been converted to 12 volts (from 6 volts). This is neither all bad nor all good. The ribbed valve cover is conceivable and possible on a 118 head (1600 head) in March 1967, but probably not the norm — I expected a smooth valve cover. I’d check the engine number before I accepted this to be a matching-numbers car. I’m harboring suspicions it’s got a later 2.0-liter engine in it.

The hose bib stolen from my backyard lends a homey touch... ! ?

As has been pointed out, 1600-2 production began at 1500001, so the car you're looking at is the 19,653rd 1600-2 off the line.  An e-mail to BMW Classic will give you the car's production date and original color.

 

Cars destined for the US didn't get their own, unique VINs until the beginning of the 1968 model year, when Federal safety and emissions regulations made US-bound cars different enough to require batch production on the assembly line.  So, 1560001, the first US spec 1600, came off the line sometime after 1 Sept 1967 as a '68 car.  Same with 2002s; US spec cars began with 1660001, while rest-of-the-world '02 began with 1600001.

 

Judging from the pictures, I'd wager it's a later engine--it has the large air cleaner used on the two barrel carbs, a header exhaust manifold and a ribbed valve cover--a car that early would have most likely had a smooth cover.  However, the all chrome instrument binnacle is original, as is the steering wheel.  A lotta $$ for its condition, especially if the rust is structural (no pictures of the trunk) and if the engine isn't the original that matches the VIN.

My 1600 (1523011) was built on April 19, 1967 and has a ribbed valve cover. Like the early smooth ones, it has no casting date so I believe it is original.

That car has a lot of valuable... um, memories?

Agreed, Michael, and someone here has a ribbed cover dated March ‘67, which is why I said it’s conceivable and possible. But most 1967 1600-2’s had no ribs. And I haven't a clue why some did and some didn't!

I'll let you know I talked the yard with the car down to 2k, I offered 1k cause its mostly there and there are some valuable parts on it. I told him call me if he changes his mind, But I just finished a 1-1/2 year resto mod on my 68 so wasn't looking to jump into another project that soon

Closest I have is 1519935 at 16 March '67, ie same as you.
