FYI, although 1974 models generally used the rectangular spare tire hold-down carried over from the round taillight cars (1966-73), shown above, the rectangular hold-down fits the square taillight’s styled-steel rims poorly. BMW realized this in 1974, and created a round spare tire hold-down that was used on 1975-76 models, and fits the styled-steel rims perfectly.


So if your spare is a styled-steel OEM rim, or an OEM alloy, and especially if you have 1975 or 1976 model, also consider the round spare tire hold-down, as shown below.
