What were you driving when you graduated to a 2002?

Original Owner’s thread about reuniting with his previous car got me thinking. I’m curious where we all came from before meeting a 2002

What were you driving when you bought your first 2002 and when was that? Was your 2002 a daily driver or pleasure vehicle? Pictures welcome !

I’ll start. I was driving a 1966 beetle and was getting frustrated at the handing of the car on twisty roads when I bought my 1972 2002 around 1989. It was my daily driver for many years and many memories.

I don't have many pictures of either car but here they are. I was putting a folding fabric sunroof in the beetle during the winter in Northern Virginia. Yes, the headliner did catch on fire.

69 VW ugly Baja bug that after years of service seized a crankshaft, traded it and a some cash for a scruffy 72 in Sahara. Was immediately impressed, drove Hanz daily.

The year was 1986 I think, several others over the ensuing years until  my interest shifted to E12s. Why? Needed a bigger car, now I'm back.

A '69 VW Bug. My college car that I drove cross-country many times. Those were the days of $0.29/gal gas.

Used as a $700 trade-in allowance for the purchase of my '76 2002 on Feb. 17, 1976.

Wish I could find pictures...lot's of fond memories with that bug.

1959 Renault 4CV; wife's car was a '63 Beetle.  Sold the Beetle to our brother-in-law when we bought the '69  '02, so it became her car 'till we found an air conditioned '73 in 1978.  She got the '73, I, the '69.  She bought a Buick Century in 1985, so then I got both 2002s!

Bug eye sprite and a Opel ascona wagon. parted with the sprite to finance a performance rebuild of the m10 engine and the opel kicked around the family for decades.

I was driving a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S sedan that I had bought a couple years earlier for.... wait for it... $50. The MB needed a little work when I bought it... ?

I was driving a 1972 V6 Mercury Capri.  Nice little car but to small a trunk for a traveling turbine service engineers tools and luggage.  Took the Capri in for service at the Mercury dealer who just happened to have just received the BMW franchise for Charlotte.  While the Capri was being serviced I visited the showroom and saw the 74 Tii.  Drove it and bought it right then.  Became my daily driver until I got a company car in 1982.  Have enjoyed every minute of ownership.

‘70 GTO Judge... Ram Air III, Muncie Rock Crusher 4 speed, posi, no AC, AM radio.  Couldn’t afford premium gas for it at the time. Sold it and got a ‘69 2002. This was somewhere around ‘85.
