Craigslist Ad for "1972 tii"

FYI, this car is now at a small dealership in Nashville, with a $37,999 price tag (and a "good deal" rating by cars.com).   It is again being advertised as a 1972 Tii, despite the square taillights and every other '74+ feature, dual carbs and clear "ti" script on the tail panel.  https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/829141826/overview/

It is also still being claimed that it is car #2797 of 3,000 built--based on a screenshot of a google search that ended on the FCP Euro page showing 1972 tii production stats.  How could anyone think that a chart showing 2,797 cars built during a certain model year means that this car is number 2797 of 3,000 built??

I've been looking at 02 ads on many different sites for months now and thought I'd seen it all, but this one really sticks out to me.  Sheesh.

Bob,

In defense of their idiocy, or greed, or both, I believe they are saying there were approximately 3,000 1972 tii’s built, and this is one of them. And the first part, that approximately 3,000 1972 U.S.-spec tii’s were built is not too far from the truth. There were actually 2,629 1972 U.S.-spec tii’s built. But this, of course, is not one of them.

The seller’s chart, like most schedules published by BMW, refers to the 1972 calendar year rather than the 1972 model year — for U.S.-spec tii’s. The 1972 model year began in August 1971 with VIN 2760001 and ended in August 1972 with VIN 2762629. The 1973 model year began with VIN 2762630. Regular production of 1972 model year tii’s did not really commence until October 1971 and by the close of the 1971 calendar year, only 422 1972 model U.S.-spec tii’s had been constructed, VIN’s 2760001 through 2760422. The car from which the sale car uh... “borrowed” its VIN was VIN 2761619, the 1,619th 1972 U.S.-spec tii built. It was probably built in the first half of May 1972. So the VIN can tell us where in the production a given car falls and, given the VIN, BMW Group Archives can tell us the actual manufacturing date. A quick email to Archives with the VIN, and requesting their data, will provide the precise manufacturing date:

info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com

Regards,

Steve

Cars.com is some sort of aggregator that tries to weasel in to getting a cut of something for their "service," possibly not commissioned by the "dealer," whose ad is here :)
