Yeah, it's kind of an appendix.  Doesn't really do anything useful, but gets infected and kills you when you're least expecting it.

 

I agree, it did probably make something easier in assembly, but afterwards, it's a liability.

There's a seam in there, so when you cut the damned thing off, you have to join the 2 panels

it connects.  On the rusty daily driver, I think I pop- rivetted something over the hole when it rusted off...

i think it's just something a previous owner riveted to the car...i've never seen one on any other o2

 

i don't believe the factory did it for any reason
