Window Question(s)--Touring

I've searched the archive and learned a lot about window adjustment. (I think I need a new regulator.)

I had a couple of questions, though, that weren't addressed:

1. When rolled down, should the window be flush to the frame? Mine sticks up a bit, and it makes resting my arm on the top of the door a bit uncomfortable while driving.

2. When rolled up, I have a gap of about a cm between the window and the seal. I understand this could be one of several things--adjustment issue or I need a new seal. However, I have this paranoia that someone installed regular 2002 windows on this Touring. (I understand Tourings have a bit higher roof) The gap is the same on both sides.

I also think it's weird that the windows feel too high when rolled down and too low when rolled up...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Larry

That is normal.  There is about a quarter inch of window above the rubber scraper on my doors.

You will need to open up the doors and see what adjustments you can make.  I was able to close the gap at the top on my driver's door, but the passenger side had a mechanism with a bent arm.  I replaced it with a good used unit and then adjustment at the top was pretty easy to achieve.

I notice that your door glass has the printed "label" at the top back corner.  The ones on my '76 (standard 2002) glass are at the bottom of the back.  That might be a clue as to your car having touring glass, or may just be a variation between years.

Perhaps a photo of the printing on your windows will show numbers that indicate which glass you have.

If I recall tourings have a lower roof line than a regular sedan 02. I don’t think sedan glass would even fit in a touring. All touring glass is specific to a touring except maybe the windshield?

someday mine will be on the road... someday

A lot of oddities with the Touring windows - all are different than the sedan.

Unladen height of Touring is 1380mm.

Unladen height of Sedan is 1410mm.

However, the B-Pillar chrome trim is around 8mm taller (longer) than the Sedans!!

Anyway, to ensure you have the correct Touring windows, look at the below pics. The Touring's top leading edge curves down, whereas the Sedan glass is straight.

If you have the correct Touring glass, then, as mentioned prior, remove the inside door panels and check adjustment to get the windows higher.

Thanks so much for the insight, everyone. Especially @02Les for confirming that I do, in fact, have proper Touring glass.

I also attach an image of the print on the window. I suspect this is replacement stuff, though I don't know from when. (It doesn't seem brand new.)

I will get to work on the adjustments.

Best, Larry

  • 1 year later...

Looks like W & N don't have it.

Maximillian is, at least, showing them, but, I would try your nearest BMW Dealer. That way, if it's available, you pick it up from them and don't fret over hoping it ships to you in one piece.
