What are your plans for your 2002 for 2021?

Simple question that is hard to answer for me.

I believe this year I will try take advantage of my friend and take my prior restoration disaster to a body shop and get a re-do just about all of the body work, seal the open seams and get an awesome paint job. Need to roll the fenders as well. Toying with the idea of getting some SS bumpers and changing out the diving boards on my 75 at that time.

Replace headliner, carpet, front and rear window seals as well.

It is a body shop however, and not an 02 restoration specialist, but the price can't be beat (unless I trip to TJ). So I will have them reference this site as much as possible.

I will have to trip through WA state so I may try and visit @TobyB with a bottle of Makers in my hand so he won't shoot me in his driveway. (He probably will still shoot me and keep the bottle).

If you don't hear from me, please call the WA State Police and have them bring cadaver dogs to Toby's house.....

What are your plans?

Loose: Not tightly bound. Subject to motion.
Lose: What happens when you are spell check dependent.

1975 Malaga. It is rusty and  springs an occasional leak.  Just like me.

You have big plans, I am kind of am stuck in the "use it until it gets really tatty"...after 20 years, the paint job I did (which was ok, not great, no orange peel) is now getting tired. If I go for a full restore, might not want to drive it on gravel and at events...hmm.

She turns 50 in 2 days, so I will post some pics.

This year is only minor suspension and tuning updates. I have some new sport springs to replace the HD OEM springs and a new set of CN36's to mount in the the spring. Last thing is finally hook up the AFR, get rid of the stumble at 1800 rpm and put it on the dyno. Dyno is probably the toughest one, always some reason to put it off....

Great question. “Fred”, my new-to-me ‘76 2002 needs a lot of work.  I have been trying to prioritize my list and setting some time bound 2021 specific goals is a great idea to keep me going.  It runs and drives and I won’t be doing anything to take itnout of commission (intentionally, at least).

Since you’re twisting my arm here and making me commit, I’ll say:

-Getting brakes in good shape

-Buy tires and install the E21 wheels I already own

-Early bumpers (also already owned)

-Install missing trim

-Figure out the extent of drivers side floorplan rust, get together supplies, and find some shop space to use for the repair. City dweller problems...

-New shocks and struts

Stretch goals:

-Actually fix that drivers side rust. I suspect it’s more wide spread than I initially thought given the other rust I keep finding on the car. ?

-Replace front bushings

Change my tired engine out if I can ever manage to get a hold of a set of main bearings for the replacement.
That and build a decent space to work in, everything else is off the table until that happens.

  1. Solve a no-start (no spark) problem that cropped up just as I was putting Ludwig away for the winter
  2. Once that's done, reinstall either one of my Delta Mk10B CD units, or a NOS "Tiger 500" CD (made by the Delta folks, different housing).
  3. Figure out why my emergency brake won't hold on level ground even with the shoes and cables properly adjusted.  Possibly I've run out of brake drum (they're original) or shoe thickness.  Have new drums and shoes courtesy of several Mid America door prizes.
  4. And speaking of Mid America...try to make as many events as possible.  My usual annual mileage of 5-6000 miles was exactly 238 in 2020.

Other than that...just drive and enjoy--and perform IRAN (inspect and repair as necessary, not the country)

1. Finish the rear end rebuild: currently only need to reseal the diff and halfshafts and install those and the new wheel cylinders, then it’ll be ready lift into place.  image.jpeg

2. Finish the 5-speed swap: the 245 I bought had a frozen output shaft. Pulled it apart to find a “pivot with a divot”:image.jpeg

It’s bent from being overtightened without being properly seated.  Otherwise, the box looks good, though we’re measuring synchros and renewing seals to be sure.

3. Rebuild the steering box, which I wrestled out last week.  My machinist says he can replace worm pin and bushing, a relief.  Here in Sarasota, there is no lack of competent mechanical talent and experience with our cars.  But they sometimes take the month off....

4. Refurb the KF linkage and install an AFR meter with the readout in the seat belt warning pod.

5. Drive it to at least one regional event, maybe Mid-Am.

6. Think about the next job: a full Euro-spec engine rebuild!
