that's the thingie for towing another car on the spare tire wheel well. German term is Abschleppöse, don't know the english term - towing hook?

Let’s call it a tow hook. But you probably shouldn’t do much, if any, towing with it: it’s simply welded to the sheet metal spare tire well.

 

And it’s found on all years of ‘02’s.

i believe the actual purpose was as a tie down used to hold the car on the boat coming across the atlantic...but them i am full of crazy conspiracy theories, spreading unverified rumors and might be cancelled and or sued for spreading bad information

It's the tailhook for landing on aircraft carriers.

It's a pop tab just like on a beer can, it tears the lid/bottom off your spare tire well?

But only on early years. Later years, it just tears a hole for the liquid to leak out.

 

They actually are quite sturdy. One Winter, with an unexpected storm, I towed my car almost 2 miles in 16" of snow backwards to the highway, which was ice. The Jeep broke a driveshaft. Yokohama 008s were somehow, not as good as snow tires from thereon.

 

We had donuts.

 

The tie downs for the car are the welded tabs in the wheel well......

It's the tail hook for coming in hot.

 

My neighbor used that "tow hook" for pulling stumps, it failed.
