Let’s call it a tow hook. But you probably shouldn’t do much, if any, towing with it: it’s simply welded to the sheet metal spare tire well.

 

And it’s found on all years of ‘02’s.

But only on early years. Later years, it just tears a hole for the liquid to leak out.

 

They actually are quite sturdy. One Winter, with an unexpected storm, I towed my car almost 2 miles in 16" of snow backwards to the highway, which was ice. The Jeep broke a driveshaft. Yokohama 008s were somehow, not as good as snow tires from thereon.

 

We had donuts.

 

The tie downs for the car are the welded tabs in the wheel well......

It's the tail hook for coming in hot.

 

My neighbor used that "tow hook" for pulling stumps, it failed.
