Tire Source?

The original tire size was 165/78-13, now generally known as 165/80-13. Many owners run either 175/70-13 (wider than, but with a smaller outside diameter than the original tires) or 185/70-13 (wider than the original tires but very close in outside diameter).

If a 165/70-13 tire exists, it would be appreciably smaller in outside diameter than the original 165/80-13, 22.1” versus the original’s 23.4”. Apart from speedometer error, this is going to make a busy engine, i.e., turning at high rpm’s, even busier! Attached below is a comparison of the two sizes.

The tires with which most U.S.-imported ‘02’s were factory-equipped were Michelin’s XAS model in its “165HR-13” size (now known as 165/80-13). The XAS, introduced in 1966, has remained available since the beginning of ‘02 production. Downside? They are expensive, approximately $200 each. Upside? They remain very good tires, very well-suited to the ‘02.

Generally cheapest if purchased through Longstone Tyres (out of the U.K.)

There are lots of threads on 13” tires, with the pros and cons of many.

Regards,

Steve

Coker or Lucas tire if you want to go the vintage route. This is what I’m mounting on my spare:

Period correct, arguably cooler than Michelin XAS’s and less expensive.
