anyone know what color this might be?

The closest thing I can think of is "Garnet Red"--a not-very-common squarelight metallic--the German is Granitrot or something close.  But that color looks darker--on the other hand, color reproduction isn't always perfect.  What does the paint sticker on the car say--or what color lurks in hidden places?

We used to call that “Candy Apple Red”! And it wasn’t on the car when the car left the factory. ?

As the photo illustrates, it works nicely with purple dinosaurs... ?

That is Stuart Moulton's '02, it's a metallic Malaga-ish red. My 1973 2002 was painted that color in the early 1990s.

Same can be said for @Conserv.

Still a nice looking color, if you're going outside the 02 pallet.

Thank you, Paul,

But have you noticed how often I say “hopefully, Mike will jump in”, or “Mike discussed this topic previously”? I am a disciple, not The Man! ?

Best regards,

Stuart M is an owner here in the Mid-Atlantik area.  That car made it to Pittsburgh for O'fest a few years ago.  It's as nice under the hood as it is outside.  I don't know if he's on this forum.

Definitely not Granatrot-metallic!

Andrew: you are one of the very reliable sources of bimmer knowledge. Where do you keep all the data??
If you memorize enough VINs and part numbers, you can compete vs Mike Self!

Naw!  We all help each other.  Even after just under 52 years of messing with 2002s, hardly a day goes by that I don't learn something new from this Board.  That's what make it fun.  And the best thing is that no one is shy about sharing knowledge for the benefit of all.

cheers

Stuart reports, "The color is a PPG formulation and called Stryker Red from the last year or so of Viper production.  It is a three stage paint.  Four layers of metallic orange and six coats of the candy red and a ton of clear."
