Throttle linkage-Ball pivot?

NYNick

Recommended Posts

The picture below shows what I'm talking about. The ball the throttle linkage arm snaps onto is worn and allows the arm to wobble all over the place, making tuning for the correct AFM difficult if not impossible. Is this part available? Do I have to replace the whole thing? Can I just replace the ball? Should I just spot weld it in place and be done with it?

TIA

Nick

You don't replace the ball, you replace the linkage rod ends. Early cars had a plastic rod ends, which Winterton reproduced, but no more, so search Mcmaster Card for alternative for ends. Be sure to get both RH and LH. IIRC 6mm x 1.0. if that one is worn, then the others are too. Collect a full set!

If you are saying that the ball itself is coming loose from the arm, then I would think that a spot weld on the back side should do the trick.  Just a quick zap though, so you don't get the ball to hot; since it is probably hardened steel.  Also make sure the flange under the ball is clamped up tight to the arm when it gets welded.

Yes you can.  They are 8mm in diameter and use M5x0.8 threads.  We use them by the hundreds on our side draft linkage systems.  I can send you one to replace the ball and its stem.  They come with threads and a nut, but you could of course spot weld it on.  We only have the right hand version.

Hal, It turns out we need either the entire rod (Part # 13511260343)(NLA) or just the cupped end. I think I'd rather just have the entire rod. Any leads on getting the correct replacement?

Thank you.

Well, I don't know where to get left/right threaded rods but I do have some M5 threaded rod I could cut for you if you tell me the length required.  I don't have any left handed ball sockets though.   We just use nuts to hold both ball sockets on the rod.

I found everything you need to make those rods on eBay.  I had to make two linkage for my e39 touring rear

air suspension sensors. IIRC I looked at motorcycle linkage and generic carburetor linkages.

Also Pierce had six different sizes on their website. None of those could work ?

I think this one will. I have a call into Pierce. I just want to be sure it fits the ball and is the correct length.

Thanks everyone.

If you have a ball that's off or loose, the spot weld, might work with skill. I had a ball come off the intermediate shaft, new replacement shaft $50. Also bought the new linkage kit from Jack at ProBimmer, correct length, all done. If your lucky you'll save $100 over Jack's price of $170 shipped.
