It appears, based on RealOEM.com (photo below), that the 6-fuse holder used on 6-volt 1600-2’s is interchangeable with the 6-fuse fuse holder used on 12-volt ‘02’s (multiple sub-models) until April 1971, when the Modell 71 “upgrade” replaced the 6-fuse electrical system with a 12-fuse electrical system. But RealOEM, and the original parts catalogue, contain occasional errors and omissions: witness the “04/1972” end date rather than a correct “04/1971” end date for a 6-fuse holder.

 

(NOTE: the number of fuses does not indicate the voltage of the electrical system. VIN 1533868, manufactured August 18, 1967, was the first 12-volt ‘02, and all ‘02’s subsequent to that were 12-volt cars.)

My point is that if you are looking for a 6-fuse holder, any 6-fuse holder, produced March 1966 until April 1971, may be a proper substitute, at least according to the modern RealOEM.com parts catalogue. I would also admit that BMW tries hard to broaden parts interchangeability, in order to (1.) produce fewer variations of a part and (2.) appeal to a broader audience. And they’re generally not wrong: even if the replacement part isn’t a precise match for the original, it’s a functional replacement.

 

If I had a very early car (6-volt electrical system, manufactured March 1966 through August 1967), I would probably examine the original parts catalogue to determine whether the original 6-volt 6-fuse holders were different from the 12-volt 6-fuse holders that succeeded them. But that’s me being fussy.

 

If my car, on the other hand, was a 12-volt car (manufactured September 1967 until April 1971), I’d probably accept any 6-fuse holder, because 95% of the surviving 6-fuse holders probably started their lives on a 12-volt ‘02.
