This is a shot in the dark, but my hatch is rattling very loudly, but the latch mechanism seems tight, and I can't find what it could be.

Any guesses?

Could there be a forgotten passenger  back there ?

At the bottom left and right edge of the hatch should be two rubber damper thingies (same used on the hood). These can be adjusted, 'left loosey, righty tighty' so they compress somewhat when the hatch is closed. There is also some adjustment in the latch mechanism.

Thank you so much--so obvious now that you pointed it out.

The noise is now a BIT better, but I'd love to know more about the latch adjustment possibilities.

Both parts of the latch/lock assy have slotted holes to allow some adjustment, along with adjustment of the buffers. Ypu should be able to close the hatch without slamming and it should not rattle (much).
