1972tii on Ebay - Buyer Beware

This. so called, tii is I believe a 1976 that has been re-vinned. Apart from 'late' nose, tail panel & bumpers, the added structure in the trunk and missing tii air filter brackets under the hood are clues.

It's not even close to being a '72, much less a tii.  As Les pointed out, it has all the aspects of a squarelight--1 piece dash, row of relays on the left inner fender, crosshair instruments, left side turn signal lever, rear panel cutout for center exhaust pipe--even the quarter window latches are squarelight.   It does have an electric sunroof, though...

 

And of course there's no fuel injection--at least the outside rear badge says "2002 ti".  The only thing on that car that's a '72 tii is the VIN stamped (transplanted) on the inner fender, and the upper steering column cover --which doesn't have the center hump that's found on the cover used on squarelights.   Note there are no pictures of the stamped aluminum VIN plate that's next to the number stamped in the sheet metal.  

 

And...the paperwork shows a "2002tii" VIN 2781013 (that's a '74 tii VIN) delivered on 4/18/74; Arthur Allen Imports in Riverside CA was the selling dealer. 

 

The flags raised on this one match the body color...

This is not the first time this car has come up for sale, look here. This car seems to get passed around by dealership's and people who obviously don't know 02's and/or don't mind lying to people.

I forgot this car had come along earlier. It was for sale in June last year and advertised as a 1976, after that it was a 72ti or 72tii.

Vague memories returning... wasn’t it a California dealer or owner who might have decided that 1976 was a bad fact pattern if you were selling an ‘02 in California? ?

I reported it to eBay as a misrepresented vehicle, and encourage others to do the same. 2761619 will be recorded here as being incorrect for the red 1976 US appearing 2002 pictured in the eBay listing rather than the 1972 2002tii the seller Sanfer Sports Cars of Miami Florida is representing it as.

 

I wonder what the engine number is?

Unbelievable, this Frankenstein 02 has made its way from So Cal to South Florida with a stop at a used car dealer in Nashville TN last Fall.   This 02 was a hot topic of discussion on this forum last summer and in Facebook 02 forums.   Even Stevie Wonder can see that this is a poorly executed VIN swap.

Not going to lie, if this was $8k I'd be all over it!  Much like Ed Bolian, I love cars with troubled pasts!  Just not willing to pay for them!

The imbedded finger print near the stamped “1972” VIN could possibly be used to trace who did the previous work?.

 

Even Sanford’s write up states the 1972 might be a 1976.

The car is now listed as a '76... thanks to some policing by the FAQ, I'd imagine.

Just another bottom feeder dealer getting into the action and setting forth more bad information about these cars.  

 

I would not be surprised if this dealer worked for or is associated with that Dallas outfit.  :-) 

 

Between BAT prices and opportunistic dealers, and all the fools on CL driving prices up, people might get the wrong idea.
