Color combo

Clearly, you’re not wed to your car’s original exterior color, since you’re looking at three different exterior colors. So, are you committed to (a.) an ‘02 color available the year your car was manufactured, or (b.) any ‘02 color available from 1966 through 1977? What year is your car?

And if you’re flexible about exterior colors, how adamant are you about matching the exterior color of your choice to the most common factory interior color?

I ask these questions because I believe (1.) BMW’s default and most common exterior-interior combinations were sometimes… unfortunate, and (2.) there are sufficient exceptions to those factory default combinations to squeeze in a… better combination!

The first photo below shows the exterior-interior color concordance from the January 1972 paint and upholstery brochure. I’ve highlighted Colorado, Inka, and Taiga. All three, by default, were intended to have standard cloth-and-vinyl interiors with tan-gray cloth inserts in smooth black vinyl seats, S 70/92 (where S indicates Stoff or cloth, 70 is the color of the cloth, and 92 is the color of the smooth vinyl). But U.S. cars — thank you Hoffman Motors Corp for serving as our Big Brother — received the optional all-vinyl interiors, K 88/92 (where K indicates Kunstleder, or vinyl, 88 is the color of the molded vinyl, and 92 is the color of the smooth vinyl).

Certainly with Taiga, I would absolutely jettison the black interior and replace it with the saddle all-vinyl interior, K 14/20, where 14 is the color of the molded vinyl, and 20 is the color of the smooth vinyl. The second photo, also from that January 1972 brochure, shows S 70/92 and K 88/92 boxed in blue, and K 14/20 boxed in red. And I would gladly face the withering assault of my colleagues here with… indifference! ? I’d point to un-thinkable, but fully-documented, factory examples such as Inka with Nylon Brown (tan), third photo, and Pastelblau with Black, fourth photo. Yes, those are original window stickers, accompanying two amazingly-original 2002’s.

Regards,

Steve

Oh… in September 1973 (square taillight introduction and beginning of 1974 model year) Taiga is still paired with a black interior, but… by August 1974, Taiga was paired with Nylon Brown (aka, Beige), the square taillight tan interior. Interior 0003 was the standard cloth-and-vinyl interior. Below, from the August 1974 paint and upholstery brochure.

Thank for the detailed explanation Steve!

I’m one foot in and one foot out. I want to change the color, but I want it to be a period correct 2002 color.

I’ll study the charts!

My '76 is Fjord metallic with tan leatherette (genuine naugahydes). It's grown on me after 45 years!

I also like the Baikal blue with the L 2727 or L 0707 interior for the roundies.

I have a 72tii fjord, which will stay fjord if I get  to the resto. Tan, brown, parchment Tabaco  for sure on that one. Thanks for sharing.

I couldn’t find a 1969 inka on google. Most are 72 and up

So is the Chamonix car you’re contemplating color-changing a 1969? Of your three proposed exterior colors, I believe only Colorado existed — it was introduced for 1968 as a 2002ti-only color, but expanded to all sub-models for 1969.

Let me find a 1969 brochure if your car is a 1969 (I actually believe that black and saddle interiors were shown with Colorado just after its introduction. There’s also an early French-market factory brochure that shows a Colorado example with saddle interior. So the 1976 Inka is neither the first nor the last example.

If that's the case, again thanks to our buddy Max Hoffman, only 5 colors were offered that year (and '68 also, IIRC) if you bought your car in the US:  Nevada, Granada and Chamonix, and at extra cost, Baikal and Polaris.  I have a letter from Hoffman Motors dated December 1968 stating exactly that...no special orders.  There are US spec 2002s around in other colors that were offered that year, but most have been tracked to overseas ordering/delivery to military or diplomatic personnel, and not through Hoffman's dealership organization or Hoffman Motors overseas delivery program.  So you could paint your car one of those other 1969 colors and no one would fault you on it...at least I wouldn't.  How about you, Steve?

Oddly enough, while '02 were only available in those 5 colors, 1600s were available in 12!  Go figure.  Kinda like Honda Civics vs CRX's--early CRXs only came in three colors, while Civics in at least a half dozen.

Linking Mike’s post to a contemporary paint and upholstery brochure, here is the global brochure of December 1968. This represents the 1969 model year, which would have begun in September 1968.

You’ll see, below each exterior color, the interior color options by model. As Mike says, in addition to the five colors officially offered by Hoffman Motors — Polaris metallic, Granada, Chamonix, Nevada, and Baikal metallic — you can see that the rest of the world, and friends of Max Hoffman, and people owed favors by Max Hoffman, and U.S. buyers choosing European Delivery Program, and U.S. servicemen serving abroad, taking delivery through agencies other than Hoffman Motors, and… could also get Florida, Atlantic, Schwarz, Sahara, Colorado (still “ti-only” in December 1968!), Tundra metallic, or Bristol.

I’d probably never change a factory exterior color on a car I owned, but if someone was adamant about changing the exterior color on a 1969 2002, I’d suggest they choose a color actually available on a 2002 in 1969. Hell, I wouldn’t tattle even if you painted a 1969 non-ti Colorado! ??

Steve

I’m all about original, but lately it’s about what looks good as well.

I thought about Florida, with tan/Tabaco, subtle but elegant. it’s hard to ignore the inka and black.

I think I’m going with that, as long as no one gives me $h1t later lol :)
