Saw in a recent Roundel (the BMW butt-smooching magazine of BMWCCA) an interview with Bangle where he insulted the degign philosophy of J Mays, whose designs from the VW Concept 1 (which became the New Beetle) to the new Ford GT40 and T-bird have been pretty much universally praised. He said Mays will eventually end up back at the Model T if he continues his supposedly retro philosophy. Interesting that the BMW flagship Z8 is a retro copy of the 1950s 507 and Bungle has no problem with it. Bet the production GT40 will destroy the Z8 in pretty much every aspect of performance, but hey, it's "old design", right?

I saw a new 7-series up close the other day and almost hurled. The front end and greenhouse are OK, but that rear end is the fugliest thing this side of the Dodge Stratus which illigitimately fathered it. I predict that the iDrive will be a disaster, too. Mainly because the 60-somethings that generally buy 7-series will reject it after they crash into something while trying to figure out how to turn on the defroster. Another little problem will crop up when the iDrive controller eventually malfunctions (like computer mice always do) and renders the car basically useless until it is (expensively) repaired. If Bungle is allowed to mate his Dodge Stratus with the 3-series, BMW will lose its bread and butter sales leader to other brands like Audi, where modern design doesn't have to be ugly.

Just a li'l rant ;-)
