Help with Engine Block ID

Recommended Posts

I think I found a good engine block to use, but need help identifying it as a 2.0L engine that will work in my '02.  I can tell by the casting that is a 1983 build.  I'm a little concerned about the port above the starter, as my Tii block didn't have that. Also, not sure if it's broken where the dipstick tube should go?  Let me know if you can help.

....the VIN stamped on the starter boss does fall in line with the blocks cast even for the 1600's (Sept67)  or the early 2L in Feb 68 so I am not sure if have helped here. I am confident you will receive more info from those who are far more versed in ID "ing" this one....GLWT

That appears to be a 1.8 L  block based on the markings

Its dimensionally the same as a 2L block but the crank and pistons are different, thats where the change in displacement takes place.

Install a 2L crank and pistons and voila! you have a 2 L M10.

So, yes it will work as a 2L but you have to change the crank and pistons.

The 1.8 crankshafts look a lot different with smaller counterweights

Looks like the tube that holds the dipstick assy is missing.

That nipple/fitting is for I believe, a heater hose.  easily fitted with a plug if not needed.

That number almost looks like an NK VIN, minus the leading zero...

When did BMW VINs have 8 numbers?

If you ignore the first 0 I still can't find that VIN.

I ran into the same issue, Les. But with a casting date of October 18, 1983 (“18K83” in the raised oval frame), odds are that it was for an early 1984 model. And that, in turn, points to a 1.8-liter engine for an e30, as others, including @bergie33, have already concluded.

Best regards,

Steve

I had a feeling we’ve been down this road before — also with somewhat inconclusive results.

And again, these post-‘02-era blocks were stamped with 8-digit engine numbers beginning with “0”. One of these earlier blocks, similarly, has a casting number of 1278464, cast into the right side of the block, at the top front. Just like @bergie33’s, shown below. And, similarly, we — OK, I — punted and said “yeah, e30 1.8-liter”.

So I’m going to stick with that.

Regards,

Steve
