A little earlier (1991) I visited a salvage yard in Oklahoma City and found a running '74 automatic with really nice Taiga paint and an equally nice buckskin interior--missing one window--for $250.  Woulda bought it but had no way to get it back to Ohio as I had driven my '73 there...

Slav,

You weren't super engaged for a number of years (although you were certainly around!), so here's my little input regarding the past ten years.

Timeline (from my worthless perspective).

2009-2011 (UKNOWN): I started getting 3-4 calls a week from gentlemen who were selling their air cooled 911's to cash in on that market upswing.  They still wanted a fun German classic that was affordable and found the 2002 a great option to buy, hotrod, and enjoy in the way they used to with the 911.  Younger guys who were import tuners or muscle heads in the 2000's wanted to start branching out and saw these cars as affordable option.

2010-2015 (UNDERGROUND COOL): The cars were increasingly on people's radar and cars were being bought up at "good value" prices.  Shops started to get high-dollar build orders from wealthier clients more concerned with enjoying the cars as opposed to their final value.

Media attention started building (this timeline also coincided with the growth of social media and youtube):

                   - 2002 owner Josh Clason starts filming cars on his youtube chanel "Depth of Speed".  These were the first short featurettes featuring classic cars and their owners on youtube.   He featured a number of older BMW's and helped the founding of Petrolicious (making those videos for a span of time).

                   - Classic Motorsports Magazine: Taiga 2002tii project.  Tim Suddard and Per Schroeder wanted to do a 2002 as some of their other Porsche friends were doing, this led to a year-long magazine-featured restoration.

                   - Clarion Builds Program: 1974 2002 restoration documented every step of the way.  Jubal; the program director was a young guy who had a 2002 in high school (while working at an audio shop).

                  - ViceGermany: video of Rey "The Collector" went relatively viral at the time with well over 1.5mill views.

                  - Mike Burrough's Stanceworks (making them cool to younger crowds).  The 02 was seen as the cool hipster car.

                   - Igor's CA Tuned also making them cool to younger crowds, being an early instagram adopter.

                   - A couple 2002 guys started a blog called Bring A Trailer, where they heavily featured their favorite car.

                   - Other media started to feature 2002's.  SpeedHunters (featuring Ray's slammed 02 and Steve's Autocross car), EuroTuner featuring a couple GROMA 02's.

2016: The Clarion Builds car sold for $125,000 at auction.  Although this was a charity auction, it brought an enormous amount of attention to the car's value potential; this seems to be the point where it became clear that the car represented a financial opportunity for investment/collectors.  This was followed by the VSR S14 car a year later along with some higher 2002tii results.

2016-2021 (MAINSTREAM):  The media mixed with investor/collectors and the median selling prices started jumping.  Tons of newer media types wanted to grow and started piggy-backing off of earlier media, Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld joined in.  "Original" started to become "desirable" as it offered the easiest/safest learning curve for new investors.  Older owners wanted to start cashing in, etc....

2021-?:  Covered in another thread.

Petition to give Slavs his own blog.  Working titles could be:

'Uphill both ways in the snow'

'Curmudgeon's Corner'

'Sad Times with Slavs'

' :( "

Open to other suggestions.
