Very informative I didn't know that a factory Recaro leather interior was common.

You're smarter every day!

... dumpster fire...

The E30 came out of the 2002.

The E21 came out of someone's butt.

Probably someone who had been kicked off the 5er squad.

I am currently going through an automotive masochism phase-

(I bought an 86 Saab 900 turbo, and I figure

that's the pinnacle of automotive self- flagellation.

The engine's backwards, and it's chain drive)

so when a friend of my in- laws said, 'do you want a free 320i?'

I leapt at the proposition.  The long- term rat infestation sealed the deal!

My 2 goals- to get it to run and drive as it sits, so I can experience all the

joie de vivre that it never had (and show the PO, who is still a bit invested in seeing it live)

plus, experience the full sensory input that only warmed dried rat piss can deliver-

and then strip it, convert it to small bumpers, and stick a much larger engine into it.

As well as redesign the front struts to behave like a proper suspension.

Because I think under all the ugly details, the body lines have some promise.

If I'm wrong, I'll put it on BaT as an E30 prototype.

For the cognoscendi...

not anytime soon of course...

I had a somewhat different experience with the new '78 320i I bought for ~$12K somewhere around that time. I don't recall that much about the chassis and suspension, but the driveline was essentially the same as the 02, except that it had FI (even though a crude and early instantiation), which was a significant improvement over the carburated 02.  Too bad it was so heavy, which made it slow and stodgy, but the body and chassis were very solid and quiet. It also had a real HVAC system (if you ordered the optional A/C), and the ventilation system was a modern marvel compared to the 02.

You are right, there were some improvements in creature comforts and the seats were better too...but the driving experience was awful and buzzy on the highway even with the 5 speed. It felt solid, but not like my E12 I had at the time. A 323i would have go, but not sure it would compensate.
