what's the attraction? - 1972 BMW 2002 Two Door Sedan

blue 72 2002

this car has been continuously listed on Ebay since last spring, each time the bidding gets to the $30k + but it has a reserve so it never sells...iirc, once it hit $40k

there doesn't appear to be anything special, in my opinion it's a pig with lipstick...no trim, sagging, painted bumpers, misaligned and wavy panels

by inference, it might be telling had it ever sold and then relisted, that is, pictures don't accurately depict the car's appearance/condition

i don't care about your reviews of the car, i've reached my own conclusions, i'm interested in what is it that keeps attracting such interest in the car? what makes it worth what is being bid?

is it because of the color, the interior...i just don't get it

ebay ad

“This example is dressed in a stunning Nautical Blue Metallic, which is in overall excellent condition. The two-door’s bodywork is straight and solid and the engine bay is extremely tidy. Inside, the car has newly upholstered E21 factory Recaro in the front, done in black vinyl while the car’s instrument panel has been wrapped in supple leather but the horn is inoperable. The black carpet looks good and has custom Coco-mats for driver and front passenger. A white, contrasting headliner looks good. The inner door panels and dashboard are in great shape for their age, as are the center console and floor-mounted shifter. Within the center console are dual USB charger. Capping the interior is a professionally designed Kenwood audio system, featuring an Internet-connected touchscreen head unit. There are also Kenwood speakers, a JL amplifier and subwoofer as well as custom Koogleworks speaker pods.”

never mind guys, after more thought, i think i figured it out...it has to be Kenwood, Koogle speaker pods and supple wrapped leather instrument panel...it may sell if seller would get the horn to toot

It did get as high as $48k back in September. I'm wondering if the Seller (whoever it might be) just doesn't want to let go of it.

A few years ago it did not fair well on BAT but didn't do bad at the Barrett-Jackson event.

It appears to have a later model (e28/30?) sunroof. That's pretty cool. I like that feature on my other cars. Too bad there's not a single picture of it. What's not cool is the fuel filter resting on the alternator! Who the hell would buy a car off ebay? Just wasted three minutes of my life looking at that stupid ad.

Good chance some of the interest is being artificially generated by trolls ( seller) bidding the car up to generate interest/ induce some sheep into a panic buy.

Shady dirtbag resellers do that on Ebay.

Also the seller may be operating under the assumption that the car is actually  worth what they invested or more. Most of us here know that except in rare cases (an exceptional car),

thats usually not the case.

The old adage "Theres a sucker born every minute" is so true.  Given time, some fool will probably buy it at the asking price.

Perhaps the seller thinks you can get more $$ by posting a ridiculous amount of pics?

Your right, its a polished turd thats a pawn in some sick game... poor little car?

Hate the weirdo sway bar with the pillow blocks?

I'd love to know how they (or someone) adapted the "tilt up/open" sunroof mechanism to the 2002.  I agree with bob02 that it's a nice feature and superior to the simple crank-back sunroof on the '02.

But otherwise...just a little too tricked out for my tastes--although the radiator hoses match the paint job!

%100 shady reseller tactics trying to generate hype .... starting to see it (although more nuanced) on BAT.

For that last comment .... ima grab my pitch fork and come after you.  Even cons like these choose the right parts some of the time.

Oh, hang on now … how does one define “right parts” ? (if comments are referencing anti sway bar with pillow-block mounting point).

It’s connected to the internet, which is worth a lot because about the internet.

I’m in the “I don’t get it” camp.  I guess the blue is pretty, the wheels are making you think maybe the car is cool?

It’s like someone that doesn’t know too much about cars’ idea of a cool car?
