Headrests mounting on these seats?

Hi guys,

i am interested in buying these seats on the photos. They look to me like 71-73 seats (not the too early ones without headrests), but on the holes where the headrests should be mounted there are some chrome caps. I have the headrests, but i wanted to ask for your opinion - can i remove the cap and just add my headrests?

The style of molded vinyl, indeed, appears to be the vinyl used from very late 1971 through August 1973.

I have no idea why someone capped the holes. Perhaps they simply preferred the early “no-head-restraint” appearance.

I cannot tell, however, whether these seats take 10 mm. or 12 mm. headrest supports. The diameter was increased from 10 to 12 mm. in late-January 1973. I also cannot tell how that center chrome cap is held in place. Could it be glued?

Anyway, the factory didn’t plug those holes, an earlier owner did. I’m guessing the guides for the headrest supports remain in place. The seats, at least from what I can see in your photos, appear to be in quite good condition.

Best regards,

Steve

Headrest delete kit. I have it on my Touring. It is just a plastic plug that goes inside the outer chrome ring. It will come.out and hopefully not break. Old plastic might not survive. As Steve mentioned, the headrest will just slide inn but you need to have the correct on.

Hey Steve--that's a new one on me.  Any idea as to the VIN where that change took place?  I've never measured the diameter of my Dec 72 build car (73 model year) 'cause I didn't know they changed the diameter.  I have a friend with a 28 Feb build date car and I can ask him to measure his.  All I knew was that the "narrow bracket" seats used in 75 and 76 were different from the earlier ones.  Ya learn something every day.

You and I know, Mike, that changeover VIN’s are convenient, and tidy up the parts catalogue, but I would not entirely dismiss the possibility that a car produced shortly after the changeover VIN might have some 10 mm. headrest supports — because Helmut found three sets of the earlier seats in the backroom!

The changeover in headrest supports coincides with the switch from “tubular” to “eared” headrests, as seen on the parts catalogue illustrations.

Parts page 52/27 represents the end of the 10 mm. tubular headrest and parts page 52/28 represents the beginning of the 12 mm. eared headrest.

For U.S.-spec examples, the changeover VIN’s are 2588023 (2002), 2533761 (2002A), and 2763352 (2002tii), all of which I believe are late January 1973.

Best regards,

Steve

Hmmm… Do we know anyone that’s trying to lose their headrest-delete plugs? ?

Best regards,
