Coolant Leak - Part II

Well....put the car up on the ramps today in order

to watch where the coolant is leaking from. Drip, Drip, Drip.....about 2-3 drips/second. So, not horrible, but definitely worrisome

and something I need fixed by the NW Springfest.

125+ cars in Chehalis WA on 05/18. Ya'll come.

The leak is not coming from the water pump,

nor any hoses but much much further back.

Forgive me, I'm pretty green but....

Directly under the engine, to the rear of the

oil pan (before the trannie), appear to be another

sort of pan, attached to the bottom of the engine

that is bolted onto the engine with a number of bolts.

I'm leaking right off of the verry last & rear bolt, right hand side of the engine.

Hmm..not a freeze plug (looking at Haynes and Fact. Manual), and the bolt is tight. Is there a gasket there which could be totally shot allowing coolant to

squeeze out since it is hot and under some pressure?

Glad to know it's not the water pump, but very stumped. Any ideas?

TIA

Jerry

I think the bolt you see is the engine block drain.

Used to get the last of the coolant out of the block.

There is a copper? washer under it.

If you take it out all of you coolant will follow.

Block drain is on the right side of the engine, under the exhaust manifold (hard to see, even harder to reach). Have you checked the inlet side heater hose where it fastens to the rear of the cylinder head? If that hose is leaking, the drip will run down the side of the block and drip off the pan.

Also, did you check the heater hoses and heater valve (in plenum chamber between firewall and windshield). A leak into the plenum chamber will run down the drain hoses, drip onto the engine and (you guessed it) run down the side and drip off the pan.

Happy hunting--hope you stop the leak.

Cheers
