Manual Choke sources

Hi folks - my new 38/38 Weber has the manual choke cable secured in such a way that my 32 inch long is not gonna reach. Who would I go to to get a longer cable end DDC49DC4-5CF2-43EA-9A64-31967B91C21F.thumb.jpeg.d6ab5624d8edfbbc1e33fcaacaa7d01a.jpegend of this?  Of course I want to keep a manual choke!  I’m in California.  ?

Perhaps I replace everything but the plastic knob and plastic bulkhead….

Suggestions?

braggart.

I ran into this ages ago, too.  Mine was much shorter than yours,

but the results were equally disappointing.  I found that there are

clever little arrangements that allow you to couple 2 choke

cables together (I forget where I found them- motorcycle places, I think).

They're cylindrical, and you use a sleeve inside to couple the cores,

then fit the sleeve over

them.  You can use them as an an adjuster, too-

shit, they may be called

something like 'inline bowden cable adjuster' or something like that,

for places where both ends of the cable are hard to get to.

Toby has the right idea--I don't know what those connector sleeves are called either, but they're also used to join electrical cables.

What I did was to make a longer arm--the one that attaches to the carb and to which the choke cable's outer sheath is clamped--long enough so the OEM cable's sheath can be clamped to it.  I then took a piece of piano wire (the stiff wire that's used as the inner wire of the choke cable, cut it to length so that it would reach the lever on the carb, and fastened the other end to the OEM cable with one of the clamps that Tony described.  It's been working just fine since I installed a manual choke Weber in 1979...Don't have the car nearby or I'd take a picture for you..

How much too short is the cable?  Google Hotrod Choke cable  Or an MGB one version is 36 inch with 40 in of wire.

Also depends where you mount it.  From memory... most mount on left of steering wheel on the surround.

You can ask this member  It looks like he has the sheath end to the front of the car which does make for a long cable requirement.

I had the identical situation that you face – the 2-bl Weber needs a longer choke cable than the Solex 1-bl.  The quick, cheap, and easy fix is, as has already been recommended , get one of those “universal” choke cables.  I did that at first and it will do the job.  But I didn’t like either the appearance or the less smooth action of the non-OE choke cable. Small issues for sure – especially since I’m miles away from trying to be very original.

So how to extend the choke cable?  Since it’s a push-pull affair, you can’t just splice more cable because it needs the sheathing to be able to push and the splice won’t fit inside cable.  So, I corresponded with one of the true experts on this site – the above poster, Mke Self.  His fix, while simple and elegant didn’t work in my case because my Solex-fitting cable was obviously shorter than what he started with.  But he certainly inspired the solution that worked for me.

I grafted an extension onto the original cable using part of the universal cable that I had installed.  I used a $5 fitting that I got on Amazon to connect the two cable ends.

It’s intended to be used in model boats to connect the electric motor to the propeller shaft.  There also needs to be a stand-in for the outer cable and I fabricated that out of hardware I found at Home Depot – a L-shaped piece of aluminum and some electrical cable clamps that I slightly bent to serve this purpose.  All of which was very inexpensive stuff.

It looks (from inside) and works like the original because it is the original cable - modified.

What you need is the OEM Choke able for a RHD car. However, part # 13 23 1 354 545 appears to be NLA.

May be worth contacting Jaymic in the UK in case they have one, or, may know where to get one.

Great advice on here as usual! but, if you're interested in scrapping the 32 incher for a 72 incher, Pierce Manifold has the choke cable kit.

and then the black plastic flange slips on over the threads and then she fits right into the grommet on the column.  24 bucks.
