This is a blue-plate California car currently garaged Texas in what may be described as in near-survivor condition. It’s complete and appears to have never been taken apart. Unique only to the very early cars, it has the ultra-rare 10-spoke grill with thin surround center kidney grill as well as the embossed...

I’m very impressed: this is an amazingly original and complete example! The seller’s description is excellent and informed.

There are, however, areas that might have been re-painted and my initial reaction to the left rear wheel well — based solely on one photo of the trunk — was that it might have been repaired and repainted. Or maybe just repainted… Even if I’m correct on this point, however — and I could certainly be wrong  — neither repairs nor repainting in this area alters my opinion that this is a very desirable 1967 1600-2.

If you have a taste for early examples in un-restored condition, get thee to Texas!

Regards,

Steve

I agree: this view appears to shows nothing but original undercoating and paint.

The paint on that left rear wheel well, viewed from the trunk side, just looked so darned shiny and fresh, as I’ve circled in green below. But as I look at that photo more closely, it does appear — comparing the green circled area with the two areas circled in blue — that someone has simply cleaned a portion of the wheel well, revealing what is possibly 55-year-old paint in like-new condition.

GLWS,

Gentlemen, that change of color and texture in the outer wheel well photo is simply showing old caked on dirt, and the clean painted area is where rain water sprayed off the tire keeping that area cleaner. I’ve seen it many times.

What a wonderfully preserved time capsule of a ‘67 1600! Hopefully the next owner understands how unusually rare it is as it is, and doesn’t do a thing with it but preserve its originality. No restoration needed with this one, perhaps just a sympathetic cleaning and detail.

What a beautiful nightmare of a car.

Beautiful, because of the classic pure design.  Nightmare, because of the headache of maintaining all of the early-early mechanical nuances.

White Post Restorations can rebuild the early boosters, master cylinders, calipers, and rear brake cylinders. They can also reline the rear brake shoes. Front disk brake pads? I don’t know. Can they do it on a tight budget? I think not. But it’s good to know that some of the earliest, soon-superseded components can be serviced in a first class manner — since you’re unlikely to find NOS replacements. ?

Best regards,

Steve

A tii owner, I have really grown to appreciate and admire the simplicity and beauty of the 1600.  If I wasn't saving to put a ring on a certain finger, I would definitely be in the bidding for this amazing vehicle!

Working on the very early cars is easiest, given the parts are available. As for the 66-67 master brake cylinder, the rebuild kit is available from Centerline Alfa for about $15 + shipping (Kit #BK382). Yes, some of the Alfas used either identical or nearly identical brake components as the BMWs. In the case of this brake master cylinder, the 22mm seal and internals are identical as that of the 66-67 BMW 1600-2. It's a really simple brake master.

And this is why everyone who owns an old BMW should also own an old Alfa. I've been telling my wife this for years, but she isn't convinced... ?

Thanks and regards,
