Read your reply message, and while, for my beginner a$$, it was a little cryptic, I headed out to the car to see if I could figure out the "direction of rotation" of which you wrote.

Turns out that there is a little arrow which I took as said direction. Now, how to loosen was answered by yet another guess given strength by your call for a couple 10mm wrenches.

Loosened, rotated (clockwise). Went for a run and there was LESS ping. Came back and rotated a bit more. Went for a drive and voila! No ping! And, by the way.. my 2002 is BACK! Peppy, even! I need an alternator, though. :(
