Hagerty Magazine - ‘72 Tii Resurrection

Recommended Posts

That cover picture is downright scary--the (presumed) owner is squatting down, head inside the wheelwell, while the car is balanced on a hydraulic jack.  DON'T EVER DO THAT!!! Good way to get a broken neck and most likely much worse.  I'm surprised that Hagerty would run that picture, being an insurance company.

Back in the dawn of the 2002 era (1969) I lost a friend when a 2002 fell off the jack while he was under the car--it killed him.  And I only used the one-legged factory jack once; I was starting to change a tire when the car fell off the jack.  I went out the next day and found a nice scissors jack with a 6" x 6" base in our local scrapyard, and have been using it for roadside tire changes ever since.  At home, always on stands.

The Hagerty risk assessors calculated the adjusted weight of the car’s rear half — post-rust — as 73 lbs… ??

Best regards,

Sam Smith is usually quite a good read.

Haven't read this, yet.

He was one of the few bright spots back when he wrote for the RounDull

Here is a scan of the article, best I could do. Fully legible, but as it was printed full bleed; hard for me to get the whole image.

Some day an org like Hagerty is gonna come down hard on posting stuff from their magazine.  Printed in that edition "No part of this magazine reproduced without permission."

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

In addition to the $1100 they get from me yearly, they would like me to pay $75 for the magazine subscription. KMA.

If you read the caption, you will note that he states there are jack stands under there.

Mike....un-twist your knickers. That photo is of me, and I'm not a complete and absolute MORON. I'm a professional with friends who have lost family members to failing hydraulic jacks. I ALWAYS use high quality jackstands. There's one under the 2" x 4" 3/16" thick BEAM that is the replacement for the original rocker panel. You just can't see it behind my greasy torso.

Glad to hear that, Paul.  That you are a professional and not a moron!? I knew that, but didn't know that was you in the picture.  If I had, I would have known you knew better.   And besides, I couldn't see either the jack stands, or read the caption (too blurred for my elderly eyes).   You're way too valuable an 02 resource to be squashed by one!

See you at Mid America and/or Vintage?

cheers

You can read the serialized version of this escapade at Hagerty.com for free under Smithology.  Very entertaining and compelling reading.   Our own Rob Siegel writes columns for them, too.  @wegweiser this looked like A LOT of fun.  And insanity.

It was LOADS of fun - and being surrounded by people who are masters at their craft, was an amazing and energizing event, every time! These are people at the top of their game, just having FUN for a change, playing with the cars we all love.

And yeah... things occasionally got weird.

This is how I plan on dealing with a post-apocalyptic  world. Covid was just a practice run. You've been warned.
