Pictures from the Bay Area 02 Swap & Show 22

As someone who grew up on the earlier end of the"keyboard in my hand" years, you'd be surprised to learn that many of us "youngsters" relish getting dirt under our nails and working on 02s. Last year while up in the Bay for the swap and show, my alternator died a night before the show. I got there on battery power, walked the swap meet, found a $30 alternator and installed it right there on the grass with @LikeStig. It stayed in the car until last week when I swapped in a refurbished alternator before the drive up for the '22 swap and show. The dream may be more difficult to achieve than before, but it is alive and well.

For what it's worth, your car is always a delight to see. The early details are lovely. E9229D07-C7AE-4BB3-B318-33967E2A3E2B_1_105_c.thumb.jpeg.1d3d3fcf7520aefc452e020f763e7fb9.jpegB335440F-AA7F-430F-9187-CF167821E5A7_1_105_c.thumb.jpeg.e95c87d565e05e18fa1dce9604104b95.jpeg

BUT back on the topic of this thread...my father and I had a great drive up from LA in our 1600s (as I call them, the twins). Props to him, he had the top down almost the entire drive. Still the 1.6 and smooth case 4 speed in the cab, which you'll appreciate, @Milo. I'll put the rest of my photos in the album

Larry, Bob, Tom and to all of the BA’02 volunteers, thanks for putting on a great event! As mentioned, there was something for everyone, and meeting other enthusiasts, catching up with old friends and making new ones is what it’s all about. Keep up the great work.

My only caveat would be to not let the event’s success lead to its downfall. The Brisbane site has been a tradition for some time, and offers great views of the Bay. Unfortunately, the turnout means cramped parking on a sloped site, and little room for participants to spread out or even open their car doors without concern of an accidental door ding. There’s also limited space to showcase but a handful of cars that creates a feeling that only a few receive that perk for reasons unknown.

There are other venues in the Bay Area that offer a real flat grass field for with plenty of space for everything that the Swap n Shoe has to offer. Perhaps it’s time to create a new tradition?

1600s with stock motors and the Porsche synchroed transmissions are the smoothest of the 02s, just a pleasure to drive. I remember road trips from LA all the way up to the Russian River and back all along the coast. I like the drive more than I like the events. These cars are better suited for the northern part of the state, where they really feel at home with the cooler climate and curvy highways. The smoother transmission case was used through 67. It has ribs, but not nearly as many as the later cases. I  think they made the switch at some point in 68. Otherwise, the transmissions remained the same until they switched to the notchy Borg Warner synchroes at some point around 1970 (my estimate). I have a smooth case trans I removed from a 67 1600-2 which was sitting at Pick A Part during the mid-90s. That car was really solid and clean with a sunroof, a rare option then. The trans feels really tight, but it has a bad 2nd gear synchroe. I'll get it rebuilt. Many years ago somebody gave a small box of NOS Porsche synchroes for these transmissions.

Your cars look great. You got the early swan neck mirror on your 69. The 69s came with the rare trapezoidal mirror. I had one on my 69 before I installed the swan neck as well. I moved my swan neck on my 69 to to forward edge of the door as with the 66-67 cars.  The convertibles are a gem. But, they're just too expensive these days along  with so many other things.

Given the current state of affairs, I doubt I'll becoming out to the event again. I'm done with all the hype and crazy prices. It's not for me. It's for the affluent collectors etc. The Administrator's 1800, though, was nice to see. That car is a real gem and a time capsule from 1965.

@Milo Yes, I remember well, those great times in SLO, where North and South met in harmony. Sadly that 1800TI with a SUNROOF doesn’t belong to me, nor could I afford it these days. Times have changed, but there are still some who hold the torches of the past, and even some who are carrying the old school flame forward. A big part of why I support the BayArea02, SoCal Vintage, and here on the BMW2002FAQ is finding and supporting those that ARE keeping real.

Hope you feel like making a road trip up north for the first Saturday of May sometime.

The "new" owners seem to be scared to do anything to devalue their investment.

I think anyone buying a 2002 Garage Queen as an investment is missing the 2002 concept entirely

These shows have become synonymous with this new generation of tech Yuppies and stuffy old Cold Warriors who seem to think that everybody less fortunate is out there to rob them of their money.

I'm no longer going to attend the show here in LA. I've had enough of the BS. I may pop up at the Bay Area meet in one of my 1600-2s one day

Sorry to hear that, part of the joy for me with a 02 is that I do whatever Modifications “I” want, not driven by investment $$$ and I love seeing all the other ideas stock to wild

Andrew’s ?Tiaga M20 car is crazy wild from SoCal but Doug’s Carbed S14 powered car is next level home brew madness from Nor Cal, great to see them all

I just opened this for photos, ended up reading essays about nonsense ?

Anyways, it was very nice to see all of the 02s that are still running in the area.
