New Tii, first 2002

Recommended Posts

My first 02 arrived yesterday, and I'm pretty stoked! Some of you might have seen this car on CL a couple weeks back in Boise Idaho. It's a 73 2002 Touring Tii w 118k km on it and based on the paperwork, sold by the long term, 2nd owner.

Had a PPI done by the Bret Hurless from Hurless Brothers in Boise and the car checked out so the deal was consummated.

The car was picked up at 9am on Wed, and arrived yesterday at 9:20. Just a tad more than 24hrs later. Very impressed.

I've never driven an 02 but my first impressions were really great. Right into San Francisco, morning traffic and the car was happy to trundle along. Immediately struck me as a happy, quiet companion. I was smiling the whole time. My other "classic" BMW is a 72 3.0 CSL, and I wouldn't describe it as anything other than a b*tch!

Anyway I wanted to formally introduce myself and start a thread memorializing the beginning of my 02 journey.

One of the first concerns is the paint. By all appearances and suggested by Bret, the paint looks original which is great BUT BMWs metallic base coat /clear coat tech was pretty bad and the clear coat is failing on the horizontal surfaces. I'm going to try and gently get to the base coat and re-clear to preserve the original paint. Any suggestions (outside of a repaint) would be appreciated.

It's Fjord, which is interesting as it's the same color as my CSL though it's painted Chamonix right now.

Paintless dent guy just got here and we were pulling up the back floor and side panels to get to the rear quarters and it's amazing how original the car is. Down to the small chrome screws with the correct washers that hold the panel down over the gas tank and the original vent line for the fuel fill. It's almost as if no one's ever touched the inside of the car or taken anything apart.

I cleaned the dash up last night and it was amazing how dirty everything was but it's almost as if the dirt and grime preserved everything because it really cleaned up well. There is a lot more cleaning and detailing to do on the interior but everything I look at is really pretty surprising in how original and good the overall condition is. Here are some pictures from a few things. Obviously things are a mess but you can get a sense of some of the originality I hope and condition level. Lots more to come!20220708_141457.thumb.jpg.4548544a065421eaf3da3adec911ae6f.jpg20220708_150753.thumb.jpg.bc81e5ffb11b8a163b85b1a96c3d4c76.jpg20220708_141143.thumb.jpg.42a161c229d5adbe30fa1c897edc4120.jpg20220708_140837.thumb.jpg.1724977c9e4f1d2164168f5e505ce38c.jpg20220708_140816.thumb.jpg.b2dce12626acc6214776ef0491143473.jpg20220708_140952.thumb.jpg.51483caf230dabbab6cbf7ab517658c0.jpg20220708_122848.thumb.jpg.fe56e45d2d32696a1f71882a544748dc.jpg20220708_122442.thumb.jpg.52659ffacbb7a287d0dd21f1ba737d23.jpg20220708_113215.thumb.jpg.628338e02e3837e500f285ff4af1af69.jpg20220708_140853.thumb.jpg.4e6ec06cff9c69003af2ba3eb08cda55.jpg20220708_150757.thumb.jpg.e8ceabcae07869ab97aa4ab27dc24c10.jpg20220708_141452.thumb.jpg.6952d3ae66bfcef8713d9aea1a29aaa6.jpg

That’s a sharp car ! How many Touring Tiis were produced?

In my opinion the car deserves a better set of wheels.

Officially 2002 Touring Tii's are rarer than CSLs. Public docs say 723 but I think that's incorrect. Still there's likely sub 800. It's the exact same car as a 2000 Touring Tii but it's the 2002 designation that makes it rare.

Funny you should say that as I just sent payment for some Campy Ragno's!

The survival of the original cloth seating areas on the front seats certainly argues in favor of 118k original kilometers…

Looks like a great example! This car was loved and cared for.

Actually they are 5.5s, Steve. Unfortunately there were only 3 wheels but they are NOS so I had to roll the dice and grab them and hope I can find at least one more in excellent/NOS condition soon.

Well, one should be easier to find than four! I had one extra 5.5”, admittedly on the margin of “true”, which I donated to another forum member probably 5 years ago, so he could have a set of five. But he subsequently sold his ‘02 and I don’t know if the new owner is a forum member. I also find that owners who themselves install a particular model of rim tend to have a much stronger connection to those rims than subsequent owners. I wouldn’t be shocked or horrified if those five Ragno’s were replaced by a new owner’s favorite rims, and are sitting in a garage waiting for their next life!

Good luck!

Steve

Very nice, and welcome to the 02 fraternity/sorority.  Liked the under "trunk" pictures--always wondered how things were laid out there in a Touring.  Nice little tool compartment where the jack lives.

Those KMs must be correct per Steve--that seat insert fabric isn't very long-lived, and yours isn't worn through as it would be with much higher mileage.  The  "chrome" trim on your door panels is perfect.  Very rare these days.  And you have the factory sport steering wheel.   Only seen on US spec cars for part of 1970 and 71.

Couple of quick suggestions:

  • when you go to replace the weatherstripping on the sunroof, the best price I've found is from Rock Auto.  It's made by Uro and is identical to the stuff BMW sells, for about half the price
  • That appears to be open cell foam sealing the joint between the gas tank and the body.  If it hasn't already started, it's gonna accumulate water (and there's lots of that in SF) and start rusting both tank and body.  Wait 'till the tank is nearly empty, then pull it and replace either with closed cell foam (hardware store weatherstripping) or 3M Strip Caulk.  You want a tight seal that won't hold water but also won't glue the tank to the body so it'll be difficult to remove in the future.

Per the factory parts book, LHD 2000tii Touring VINs run from 3420001 to 3425059.  That's for pre-modell 73 cars, which yours is.  The modell 73 tourings retained  round tail lights (as did all tourings) but have the plastic grilles and other details of "squarelights"  Those VINs run from 3430001 to 3430724.  Thus if your car's VIN begins with 343, it's really a 1974 model.

Hi Mike - The published information is incorrect. I posted this information in the VIN thread. I received the below back from Andreas Harz and BMWs records directly contradicts that information that's published at least in the VIN thread.

Thanks for the tip on the weather stripping from rock auto!

Thank you for your email.

The VIN 3425000 belongs to a BMW 2002 tii touring that was manufactured on July 16th, 1973 and delivered on July 30th, 1973 to Switzerland. The original colour was Fjord metallic, paint code 037.

The BMW 2000 tii touring and 2002 tii touring are in fact the same car, only the type designation had been changed but this was already done in autumn 1972. There never was a “crossover model“.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Andreas Harz

You should get one of Stan's reproduction Golde Pop-up Wind Deflectors with the billet hinges, better than the old pot metal ones. Installs where those plastic pieces are.
