Officially 2002 Touring Tii's are rarer than CSLs. Public docs say 723 but I think that's incorrect. Still there's likely sub 800. It's the exact same car as a 2000 Touring Tii but it's the 2002 designation that makes it rare.

Funny you should say that as I just sent payment for some Campy Ragno's!

That’ll do !

You should get one of Stan's reproduction Golde Pop-up Wind Deflectors with the billet hinges, better than the old pot metal ones. Installs where those plastic pieces are.

Cool! I'll see how I get along without. I don't envision speeds in excess of 50 w the top open so I may not need it

I found an amazingly talented paintless dent repair guy that I've let lose on the car. The doors were completly wavy but most all of the paint is original so I've taken this route. It's amazing how talented he is. I'll post a bunch of before and after shots in a new thread but here are a couple after he finished the passenger door.

Also a couple more details. The dealer sticker from Switzerland matches the key ring. Cool little details. The passenger seat looks fantastic. I'm cleaning up the interior before I start on the serious external detailing it needs. 20220709_182422.thumb.jpg.a4d7a9dc99c006a27cc020a5d65224d2.jpg

Looking great, Tyson! I’ve heard acetone with #000 steel wool will remove the old clear coat. I’m dying over here with m OCD and that cover on the steering wheel. Curious what under it!

What a great find!

Welcome! Touring tii’s are rare birds indeed and it looks like you’ve scored an honest one. We usually cut our teeth on 02s then move up to e9’s. You’ve chosen a different path. Having an M10 in your life is a good thing. ?

First of all, that car is super cool.  Nice purchase.  I’ve never seen a Touring that color - that is awesome.

Second of all, my car (which is a later ‘72 tii - euro version) has the IDENTICAL steering wheel cover on it.  And get this - the first owner of my car was Swiss, and your car was delivered to Switzerland.  Maybe your original owner and my original owner were the same person, or went to the same auto parts store, lol.  I’ve never seen a cover that was the same as the one on my car…I figured I never would, since it came from somewhere in Europe in the ‘70s.

Having a great paintless dent remover? Priceless!

Had a great one in Atlanta, but haven’t found his equivalent in the New York - New Jersey area. I’m certain he’s out there, just haven’t found him…

Separately, as to paint…

From sometime during the 1973 model year (certainly before your car was built), U.S.-bound ‘02’s switched to Glasurit’s “PVC-frei” formulation for metallic paints, a desperate and entirely unsuccessful attempt to solve their metallic paint issues. I don’t know whether Euro-spec cars also received the “PVC-frei” formulation, but it’s quite likely.

My point? Having personally experienced the fiasco that was BMW metallic paints with my ‘76 — and not buying another BMW until 2010 entirely on account of BMW’s miserable handling of the issue for my ‘76 — I have first-hand knowledge of BMW’s 1976-80 views toward the problem. They believed the base (color) and clear coats needed to be removed in order to remedy the cracking paint issue, because both the base and clear coat — new technology in the 1970’s — had failed. Where they were paying to remedy such failures — it had to happen within 36 months to be covered — they insisted on paint removal to bare metal.

While you have little or nothing to lose by removing your car’s clear coat, and replacing it with a new clear coat, I’d recommend you assume conservative expectations for both the quality and durability of the re-cleared paint.

But I freely admit that I’m absolutely eager to see what a careful and conscientious owner, working with an excellent starting point — your touring — can achieve by re-clearing the original Glasurit base.

Please keep us in the loop!

Regards,

Steve

@Conserv Agree- I'm going to create another thread with before and after pics. Yes, everyone is telling me no, its impossible but they said the same about my e-type paint which looked like the street. Its a great 10ft'r now. I bought the car with a clear understanding what I was going to try and accomplish. What I didn't consider is the stunning originality of the car...so much for hotrodding it!

I just pulled the manual out of the glove box and started going through the paperwork and my jaw officially hit the ground.....

The BMW 2000 tii touring and 2002 tii touring are in fact the same car, only the type designation had been changed but this was already done in autumn 1972. There never was a “crossover model“.

The reply from BMW is VERY odd.

For BMW to say there was not a Touring ‘crossover model’ is misleading. The model 73 Touring, just like the sedans, had the updated front panel & grills and the fake wood cluster surround and ‘crosshair’ gauges.

What is generally stated as a 2002tii Touring in the faq ‘Production Numbers’ page, is the ‘facelift’ model built from 08/73 thru’ 04/74 and known as model 73. 724 of them were manufactured.

Your car, 3425XXX, is known as a model 71 E6 Touring tii. It is, therefore, one of 5059 built between 04/71 & 07/73. While it may have a 2002tii script on the rear and noted as 2002 in the sales paperwork etc., it is still a model 71 Touring tii.

Info that I have, would suggest BMW started to put the 2002 script badge on the rear of Tourings in June, or July, 1973. So, a few model 71 Touring tiis left the factory with a 2002tii badge on the rear, BUT, they were still model 71 E6 Tourings.

FWIW:

3424180, 3424275, 3424680 all have 2000tii scripts on the rear.

3424974, 3425059 have 2002tii scripts on the rear.

All the above would have been built late June into July 1973 and are model 71 Touring Tiis.

You posted earlier that the “Production Numbers” in the faq was in error…..

https://www.bmw2002faq.com/articles/technical-articles/history-and-reference/production-numbers-r228/

Now, realizing that BMW 2002 Touring tiis are actually the ‘facelift models’ model 73 only. The above reference in regard to Tourings is not incorrect.
