Black paint behind grill

The paint was emphatically not matte black. It was more semi-gloss. And, as witnessed by the wide range of replies, the number of elements with black paint varied widely. I, too, believe — like Mike — that the hood hinge braces and mounting tabs were most commonly painted. But some cars did, indeed, get an all-over treatment.

My Polaris ‘76 (manufactured April 23, 1976), which I purchased new, had black only on the hood hinge braces and the mounting tabs. And it was sloppy!

Regards,

Steve

I had a 02 guy once point out that my radiator supports should be Polaris to match the car. Cue the big X buzzer! MMMEHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

And I actually used a brush to paint mine a semi-gloss black...a little sloppily too!

Unless he was wearing an ‘02 badge, Nick, I’d say he was impersonating an ‘02 guy…

Best regards,

Here is the 71 Sahara nose I purchased to fix the nose of the 69. Note only the upper hood supports were painted black. No rhyme or reason to the painting.

But the nose was Sahara and it was removed from a complete car.  So you are saying the dark portions were black primer?

When you paint the car with the hood mounted the hinges cover the primered area that is black in your photo - you can even see the slots from the hinge.

The brushed black was applied to the hinges themselves and the part below the black in your pic. As on the Nevada car. The cars were painted in the Factory with the hood mounted, but I doubt the sahara being the original nose to the car or at least being painted once.
