I have a 262 car with a 6 position. I have a 263 car with a 12 position fuse box and a 6 position wiring harness.  Seems to never have been altered either

FWIW

2625491 was the last pre 71 built in 1970

2634875 was the last pre 71 built in 1971 (late March?)

In theory, both the above cars should have had 6 fuses, however, it is likely that 2634875 was one of the first cars with 12 fuses.

I guess having a 6 fuse harness to a 12 fuse box gives you extra room for spare fuses🤔

So, just to clarify, your 263xxxx car has:

1. A hole in the left inner fender that is sized and finished for a 12-fuse fuseholder (photo below of my ‘76’s 12-fuse fuseholder’s installation),

2. A 12-fuse fuseholder installed,

3. Only 6 of that fuseholder’s fuses are connected to the car’s wiring harness, and

4. No evidence that the inner fender has been replaced, repaired, or modified!

If all answers are yes, very cool. It was a car right on the cusp of the change!

Best regards,

Steve

Yes that is correct. And it was a car delivered directly to schnitzer

And that’s even cooler than the Modell 71 business! 🙌

How about the manufacturing date for it?

Best regards,

  • 2 weeks later...

this in response to Steve's request for production info on my 71, 2571985.  info provided by hdzinfo indicates 1985 was manfactured mar 30, 1971 and delivered to hoffman april 8 1971.  Dont know how this fits into the original discussion re 6 fuse panel but 1985 may be on of the last with 6 fuses

Did Hoffman have a No Trade Zone in Germany?

Seems really fast to get a car from the production line in Munich to New York in only 9 days???

Or...did they just take possession of the car on April 8?

Just wondering,

John

Yes the title transferred just before the car loaded on the ship, at that time cars had to be paid for before leaving the country of origin, not to mention the at sea insurance.

As @Son of Martyand @HBChris said, it’s the date of “legal” delivery, with New York being the legal domicile of Hoffman Motor Corp.

This legal delivery data, as provided by BMW Group Archives,  says absolutely nothing about the car’s physical delivery date or the car’s U.S. Port of Entry (POE). But dozens of ‘02 owners have convinced themselves — not understanding the data provided — that their U.S.-bound ‘02’s were flown to New York City, to Hoffman’s Park Avenue offices, and from there were transported to the far corners of the U.S. ! 🙄

Regards,

Steve

Thanks,

Well, the cutoff marking the beginning of Modell 71 production is supposed to be April 1971, so a March 30, 1971 manufacturing date places the car right at the cusp of the switchover.

VIN 2572069 was the last U.S.-spec pre-Modell 71 manufactured. So, yes, yours was less than 90 cars from the end of U.S.-spec pre-Modell 71’s.

Thanks for digging out this info.

Best regards,

Steve
