Parts for 235 Getrag 5 SPD, Dogleg Close ration transmission

Hello 2002FAQ family,

 

I recently purchase a 235 Getrag dogleg transmission, condition unknown. The gentleman I purchased it from mentioned that he owned it for several years and the person he purchased it from said it was in a good working condition.

Before installing it on my 02, I like to get some advise on the followings:

What usually goes bad on these transmissions?

Is there a repair kit that I can purchase and keep incase I need it in the future?

Who may have parts that may want to part with?

Who(expert) would you recommend in Southern California?

How much you want to spend? 

 

MM can fix you up, or are you thinking like cross referencing bearings?.

Where is MM located at? I need them to inspect it and let me know what has to be done on it, if any.

Syncros are NLA, which is the most common problem. The thing is, you need to put it in a car and drive it so you will be more educated on what to tell any prospective rebuilder the problem/s it has, if any.

If you get an endoscope you can already check some of the destructions through the oil filler plug.
Check the gearwheels to the rear of the box.
Synchros can be refurbished - at least here in germany some companies do that.

Search is your friend here.  There is good info on what typically wears and needs work 

I wouldn't rush into rebuilding it until you have tried it in the car

Mine had a bad output shaft which I sourced a NOS one in South America.  Had the bad one repaired.  Rebuilt by Bill Holmes of Bavarian Rennsport.  Replaced a couple of worn synchros from Germany while it was open.

You probably will need a different length driveshaft also.

From 4 speed to 5 speed, yes. From 5 speed to 5 speed (245 to 235), no.
