Distributor compatibility

Hello,

 

I have a 1974 2002, and I would like run an earlier distributor with vacuum advance. What year model distributors will work? For instance will a 1969 or 1970 2002 distributor work?

A '76 49-state distributor has vacuum advance.  # 213-170-164.

Really looking for a non vacuum retard distributor. Does anyone know if a 1969 or 1970 distributor will drop in without issue (i.e. same gear, depth, etc...).

Any one from any year will fit, you have to check with the dist # and see what kind of curve it has.   Even the early 320idist up to 79 will work ( after they went to the 1.8 l in 80 , they changed the direction of the drive )

But to @Daily02’s point, I believe that 1974, 1975, and the California version of the 1976 were capable of vacuum retard. And I haven’t a clue about e21 distributor advance! 🙄

 

I’m betting Tom and Tom Two — distributor enthusiasts that they are — will jump in at any minute.

You can just change the vacuum capsule and retain your distributor. 

If you truely want to be "Master of The Timing Curve Domain" why not buy a 123 distributor? Just be sure to get the one that doesn't spew oil on to the circuit board.

The '74s had vacuum retard.

All '75 & '76 California cars had both vacuum retard and vacuum advance.

'76 49-state cars had vacuum advance.

Sorry @Daily02, I don't have any info on the '69 or '70 dizzy.

If you want a distributor with NO vacuum (advance or retard), then look for a Tii dizzy.

Whatever path you take, make sure the vacuum line is connected correctly. Do you still have/use the black electro-valve, coolant switch, and EGR relay?

I guess I worded the question poorly. I just want to know if the if the distributor gear and the opening in the head are compatible, and nothing else.
