Replacement Muffler

Yeah, those are Anza mufflers, not original BMW.

They work in a pinch but I dont care at all for the ones I installed on my 76.

Too "rappy" like a 2 stroke, far from "throaty"

You get what you pay for with them.

I cant wait to replace at least the rear muffler with OE.

I just couldn't imagine installing Anza on any self respecting Tii😉

Might be time to check out the a BMW dealer, these guys do pretty good with online sales.

Genuine BMW Part # 18121108739 (18-12-1-108-739) - Rear muffler. TII. Fits 2002tii. Ships from BMW Northwest, Tacoma WA

Gotcha! I had read some people on here not liking the Ansas. I assumed there were different sport Ansas people were using and that these stockers were closer to OEM. Turns out I was just completely making up shit! Probably will be a muffler shop for me.

That says '74 up, but shows a '75-'76 center exit style.  The '74 uses the side exit.

(FWIW, I installed a side exit in my center exit car and learned that the hangers are in opposite 'corners' of the muffler).

Blunttech puts "BMW" on the listings for genuine BMW parts, so I assume that's the most recent BMW offering.  I think I recall reading that Eberspacher no longer supplies them.  (IIRC, Borla does).  So, if the OP is looking for the current BMW muffler, that's probably it.  If they're looking for Eberspacher, that's probably not what it is.

Sorry I should’ve been more explicit that’s basically what I meant. I know that Borla is an OEM supplier of mufflers but obviously the original equipment was Eberspacher, so I’m assuming that’s what he was looking for

Late last year I thought the exhaust on my Tii had finally died, turned out it was just running poorly🙄 my exhaust is a  Eberspacher and the dealer said he could get it in 3 weeks from Germany as only the back box was in Melbourne, it wasn’t cheap but my current one still on the car is 14 years old and is really good still, please don’t tell me the folks at BMW have now discontinued the  Eberspacher , if they have I’d 100% go the W&N stainless in side exit!

My new Eberspacher muffler for my ‘74 just arrived at the dealer this week, so I can confirm what others have said: BMW does sell mufflers, and they do sell Eberspachers as Eberspachers.  I like our faq vendors a lot and use them when it makes sense, but I buy a lot of my bulkier items from the dealer because they give an old guy/old car discount that makes their pricing competitive and it’s easier to return defective parts.  Like my year and a half old Eberspacher muffler!  It leaks from every crimped seam!

Tacking onto this thread: since my Eberspacher rear muffler was still under warranty, the dealer replaced it free of charge.  The new one leaks too, only from different seams.  And of course there’s a fair amount of leakage at the clamped joint between center muffler and rear muffler.  Question: how much of each is acceptable? Seems it’d be very difficult to zero the leak at the joint, but love to know if that’s possible.  And do the knowledgeable among us consider leaks like this to be defects?

Not sure they are leaks..  not being ejected under pressure, just kinda wisping there.

It's brand new? They can smoke a little while the paint cures.

Weird (as in dumb) place for a seam on a muffler though, WTF is up with that?

Maybe sealant there smoking as it cures?

Seems like options for decent  exhaust systems are rapidly shrinking,.

Really dont care for Ansa and now OE appears to be crap as well.

The standard non sport Ansa rear muffler on Survivor has got to go, really dont care for it.

Gonna buy me the closest fit universal Walker muffler and break out the welder.

Or maybe just take it over to the local muffler shop and see what the can do.

Appreciate the thoughts.  I was using one of those nifty smoke machines to test the flange connection, so yeah, it’s under pressure and it’s leaking.  I have calls in to the dealer and to Eberspacher North America to inquire as to how much exhaust they think a new muffler should put under the trunk of the car.

But keep the opinions coming!

If it's between the bolted joint on the pipe, then use some permatex muffler sealer. It works, like toothpaste initially and then hardens after it dries/gets hot. Not for the leaking muffler seams tho...

I'll need a new muffler too but haven't gotten to that yet.

I’ll be using the orange Permatex for the slip joint.  Big convert to that stuff.  Good luck with your new muffler, Jason!

After three tries, BMW NA has delivered me a muffler that passes the smoke tesst.  This one’s nice and tight.  It does not appear to be an Eberspacher — none of the usual stamped text to that effect.  That doesn’t bother me — it identical to an Eberspacher except that it’s solid, and one other detail: the brand new decorative chrome tip that has to be heated and pounded onto the Eberspacher tailpipe fits this tailpipe looser than a used rubber.

No markings on the muffler itself except the part number.  Any ideas as to who might have made this one?
