Dear Steve:

Thanks for the Blunttech tip.

Any thoughts that you (or anyone else) concerning my too long sending unit?
Thanks:

Scott

Yes, Scott,

Your too-long sending unit is for the 51-liter tank (found in square taillight cars). The part number for the 46-liter tank (round taillight cars) is in my earlier posts.

Jim's idea ^ is the right approach!

Best regards

Steve

Great!

Where would you suggest that I go to find this short fuel sender unit?
Scott

Scott,

I’d be looking on eBay and here for an NOS or good used unit. Roger’s tii lists them, but has none in stock currently:

Maximillian BMW shows it as available for $167, but there’s no guarantee on that (photo below).

Did you try Blunttech and Walloth & Nesch?

Best regards,

Steve

Thanks, I will use your suggestions.

I’d try to order one on Maximillian immediately. They’ll refund your payment if it’s unavailable.

Best,

Steve

Dear All:
Here is my update on my gas tank progress along with two (2) questions.
My new “short” sending unit will arrive with a return gas inlet.
My inlet/outlet unit also has a return gas inlet.
Do I split the return gas to both units or just cap off the sending unit?
I purchased a gas filter for the bottom (inlet) of my inlet/outlet unit.
There is another gas filter closer to the engine, I assume close to the mechanical injectors.
Should I add a third gas filter?
What mesh size or micron size for the injector filter and the possible third filter?
Thanks:
Scott

The in tank fuel pickup/return has a mesh screen and is sometimes called a trash screen, not a filter per se.

The second filter up front is has a very fine particle retention media as needed for injections systems and is much finer than filters for a carb. No other filters are required.

The level gauge you have is for a carb car and is ok for your use.  The return nipple should be capped off and is not needed for your car.

OE pumps have another trash screen in the pump inlet that over the years may have become filled with trash and should be inspected/cleaned.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.
