Unusual Roundel Cap Image

Recommended Posts

These caps came off my 1976 original steel wheels. When I peeled the discolored decals off this is what I found. I have never seen this pattern. Any suggestions from the cognoscenit? I plan on having the wheels redone. Anyone know the original paint code?

Should I put new decals on? I like the simplicity of these.

I like ‘em as-is too. A little polishing can likely remove any remaining traces of the black parts of the roundel and blend the edges of the clear letters.

IIRC, Mike has mentioned a Testor’s blue as a good match of the roundel blue.

Easy way to remove old stick-on roundels--especially the older ones that are 1mm or so thick aluminum is to gently heat the back side of the cap with a hair dryer, or if you're adventurous, a carefully played propane torch.  It'll soften the glue in 10 seconds or so, and you can pry it off with little effort.  Just wear gloves--it'll be hot.

Testors enamel may be hard to find these days. I’m a model builder (one of many hobbies) and the old enamel Testors bottles are gone.

ford engine blue works in a pinch, if you ask me.

Testors 1110 blue is a near perfect match.  IIRC Hobby Lobby has Testors model paint...
