haven't got pics of the others, but one was a freshly restored Alpina B7S engine - very pricey for the owner who wants to stay unnamed.
I myself had this with a VW Engine when I was 20. I pressure washed throughly, had it twice ultrasonic cleaned did also the brake cleaner pipe brush compressed air cleaning and still my oil cooler exploded twice (stuck oil release valve) before I realized my new engine was crap.

What's with the brown, varnish looking coating on the bearings in the non galled areas?  Is there more to the story?

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

That's copper which becomes visible once the silver stuff is gone

I like just polishing the raised portions, lettering. 

I used progressively finer and finer sandpaper grits attached to a flat hard rubber sanding block and slowly carefully sanded, making sure I did not sand anything but the raised parts. Then Mothers polish. I did not polish the zundfolge 1342
