Was the early oil filler cap chromed?

Yep...it says "vented" on it, and an oil cap wouldn't say that.  Nice looking, though.

No it doesn’t, Mike, it clearly says Not Vented on it.  For an oil filler cap I wouldn’t be using a vented cap…

 

I already mentioned that in my searching I’ve found “Luftdicht” labels on both oil and gas caps of the period. And the majority of the gas caps in this style I’ve found are vented.


Maybe it’s was originally a gas cap, but it’s now clearly morphed into an oil cap!  😁

My pore ole eyes didn't catch the "non" in the picture.  But since there are neither vented or non-vented oil caps--at least since about 1963 or so when PCV valves became mandatory--it's still a gas cap.  But makes a nice blingy oil cap.

Maybe, though @jimk just said his retired old M10 oil cap has the non-vented label on it too.
