Hood Seal Position

Hi guys,

 

I took the hood seals for a paint job but now I'm not sure if these 2 seals are in the correct position.

Both of them (red and yellow) have the rubber lip pointing to the windshield. Is this the correct position?

Yes, the yellow seal edge points to the windshield, but the red tucks closer to the lip.  Here's a picture.  Although the second picture of the unmolested hood shows the red seal flipped over.

Would you feel better if a one owner said the yellow seal lip points forward the red seal point to the rear?

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

John, my ‘top’ little one is oriented exactly like yours.

When I replaced my ‘long’ horizontal one in 2013, after asking on here, I went with the pointed forward as it seals off the hood better from carb fumes.

Good point! 

The air pressure from the engine bay (fan and forward motion) is greater than the negative pressure in the plenum which would act to increase the tightness of the forward-facing seal.

I'm going to flip my bottom seal.

The two big ‘side’ hood seals on the fenders also point/curve inward to contain hood fumes…


Correction: they curve up and outward  so they seal on the underside of the hood when closed. I shouldn’t rely on memory… ( sry )

Actualy the base of the windshield is the the highest pressure on the front of the car remember the ram hoods on the 60/70's muscle cars.

If everybody in the room is thinking the same thing, then someone is not thinking.

At least the side pieces are idiot proof and can only be installed one way.  I'm doing it today on my car and I'm an idiot 😄

 

I'm still waiting to check the larger hood seal on my '74.  I suspect it's installed like the one on John76's car.  The jury is still out on what "backwards" is or not...
