M10, short or long block

Hi, I recently had an engine go in my 1975 BMW 2002 and am struggling to find a replacement, hence why I'm reaching out to you all. I'm interested in m10 long blocks of any year or m10 short blocks from later cars that had the D-shaped piston tops, as I have a perfect e21 head.

P.S. I'm located in San Francisco. Thank you all.

The only U.S. cars that originally came with E21 2,0 heads were 1976 49-state versions. All of those engines, however, were originally equipped with flat-top pistons, and had a compression ratio of 8.1:1.

If the D-crowned pistons to which you are referring look just like the piston shown below, they are 9.3:1 pistons, designed for the E21 2,0 head, but only used in some Euro-spec e21 (e.g., 320i) and e12 (e.g., 520i) cars. They are extremely rare in the U.S., and would not be found in 99% of the 1976 49-state engines.

Your perfect E21 2,0 head would also work fine with flat-top pistons, just like the original 1976 49-state versions, albeit without the enhanced power that might accompany the 9.3:1 pistons.

Regards,

Steve (1976 49-state owner since 1976 😉)
