Rear Exhaust Hanger Failure...infant mortality

I just replaced my rear exhaust hanger (the rubber figure 8 part that looks like radiator hose cross section) on a long rally with a BMW part.  It failed sometime before I got home.  The one I replaced on the field lasted about five years.  What's the deal?  Are these made poorly, or am I botching the installation somehow?

Stock 1973 tii with stock BMW exhaust.

Thanks!

Did you use the plastic inserts?  They create a round surface for the rubber to ride on and protect it from the thin metal hangers' edges.

Yes...one insert on the bottom

It's carrying too much of the weight of the exhaust, possibly.

go to local parts store and purchase a short section of fuel fill hose, the heavy stuff made for connecting the fuel filler neck with the tank, mostly used on trucks and heavy equipment.  several manufacturers of the hose including gates.  i think i got 2 1/2 inch dia., cut it in 1 inch slices and keep in your car as a emergency hanger.  they will last several months and make a great emergency fix.

I noticed some replacement rubber hangers are just rubber... the original ones have some textile/webbing inside to toughen them up (like the stuff in a fanbelt).

New to 2002, my stinger exhaust was way to loud for me, swapped it out for quieter muffler. This  stock hanger let the ugly muffler sit too low for my liking. I took a thick stainless muffler clamp and and screwed it as tight as I wanted it to sit. The tighter i made the closer it got to the body. Got it were I wanted it and then squeezed clamp to form a kinda rectangular shape and it hasnt moved since and working well.

I was disappointed in the quality of a Mann air filter I ordered and told the seller so, even though it wasn't their fault.  I thought they should know and also wanted to vent a bit (more).  They said I could send it back, but I said it wasn't worth the hassle/expense and I'd cut my losses.  Then they replied saying they'd issued a full refund and I could keep the filter.  I said thank you and tired to argue, saying I was willing to pay again; but they refused.

If you're going to complain, ask yourself how it will feel if you receive the same treatment.  I'm grateful, but also embarrassed for having been a whiner.

Back to the "why did it fail?" question, I'll repeat my second question, was there a plastic insert in the hanger on the front of the muffler?  If not the weight might be transferred to the back one.

You might consider ordering two new ones and putting the front hanger in your box of emergency spare parts.

Do you have the transmission/exhaust bracket?

I just pack a small roll of baling wire so I can fix several different bits on the road not just the exhaust.
