Full resto - which look? (original, box or turbo flares)

do not take it apart before clear plan, budget and people are in place, make it a drivers car (never planned it otherwise)

Sounds like a good plan. I hope you can stick to it. I had the same plan, but when the guy I had lined up to (inexpensively) paint my car backed out, I went down a slippery slope all the way.

I’m not a fan of rabbit flares.  They just don’t look right to me. But I really love the custom flares on this car. If I wanted flares this is what I’d do. Just my opinion.

@Tommy is there a difference in the bodywork of the roundies vs the later models, except for the front and rear?

No, not really anything meaningful. Just some details that are not visible outside, like the crush zone features that can be seen in engine bay.  The charm comes from the wholeness of the original style bumpers and trim, hubcaps, low backrests,...so on.

If you go with m20 you could still have the original outlook...but if you want flares, well then the pig cheeks are only ones that look right. Turbo or other later models look out of place and rabbit flares, well they always look out of place. I don't see modifications increase the value. They probably increase the asking price but are the modded ones sold for the good prices?

But opinions, you know how they are. Make it the way you like it!

I realize that the rabbit flares are the biggest sacrifice to originality. Just lowering and choosing the right rims and tyres, like below, is also an option.image.thumb.jpg.7ae855951e60049963d58543d602b032.jpg

Another option is to roll the fenders. It's prolly not for the feint of heart and will definitely ruin the current paint. I didn't go too crazy - just folded the lip up and pulled the fenders out a little.

Here are the details of what I did.

Hells yeah! But IMHO, this 1600 should stay slab-sided…

I agree with the pig cheeks on the 1600.  If you really must have one, I think you would be able to find a 1600 with cheeks that has been built for a spec series.

Early period-correct 02 wide body designs = pulled fenders and pig cheek styles…

Looking at ETCC 1968-1971, BMW Works cars, both 02 and the 2800 CS, had pig cheeks. Alpina 1600 had pig cheeks.

Vikings didn’t have horns in their helmets!

Very much off topic, but I couldn't resist---horns on Viking helmets originated in the 19th century when Wagner's Ring Trilogy operas were first staged.

Bringing it back to on-topic...nothing quite as much fun as driving your 02 on twisty roads with a CD of Wagner opera overtures cranked way up on your cassette/CD/phone.  Great fast driving music!

Interesting, so I can blame Wagner for misrepresenting my ancestors?

Lol cassette/CD, I don't think most people under 30 know what a cassette is and CD's are almost extinct.
