engine and drivetrain Engine ID Madness

In the course of tearing down my engine, I discovered that the side was stamped "16L". This was disconcerting snice bought the car as a 2002. Well, the bores match the 2.0 engine, the vins match on the engine and car, and the vin has been ID'd as a 2002. (69, instead of the 71 I bought, should have paid closer attention) Anyway, I called 2002ad and spoke wioth Leif, and he was certain that the 16L meant 1600, until he matched the vin, and then he was stumped. So, can anyone tell me why my engine is stamped 16L? VIN starts 1-678. Thanks for any insight into this confusion.
